Anyways, yes, anyone with a hearing test has "documentation" of their hearing loss if need be. The only requirement when getting the phone installed is showing your ID and verbally acknowledging that you have a hearing loss or hard of hearing. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating people getting this thing just because it's free. I am advocating that people who have a hard time on the phone should take advantage of the program. No hoops to jump through and no upselling involved, no gimmick, no catch. As you can see from multiple testimonials in here as well as mine. If you check out their FB page, you will find post after post after post of heartfelt testimonial on how it was to get installed and how easy it is to use it. There was even a post about a 106 year old woman getting one installed and talking to her daughters on the phone and she hadn't talked on the phone for 11 years because of her hearing loss. Lot of feel good stories on there if you are looking for a lift. |

I actually agree with gedster on this. Don't get me wrong - it appears to be a good service for those people that truly need it, but CaptionCall is handing the phones out like candy and they are making the money on the per minute captioning charge So to recap, CaptionCall gives out the phone for free, doesn't charge for the service, pays a $50 referral fee to anyone that refers them and then does not even require some sort of documentation that the person is actually hearing impaired? Who do you think pays for all of this? WE DO Please don't abuse this - just like the thread about free blood testing devices for diabetics... |

Doesn't sound like an actual person. This is from the FAQs on their web site. How does the CaptionCall Service work? The CaptionCall Service works a lot like closed-caption television. It uses the most advanced voice recognition technology and a fast transcription service to display written captions of what a caller is saying on a large, easy-to-read screen. |

But overall, it doesn't seem like you can really "abuse" it as these cannot be sold since you are responsible for equipment if it's lost/stolen. Kind like when you use a cable box from your cable provider. I think getting this out and bringing visibility to the product outweighs the potential that someone will claim to be hard of hearing when they are not just to have a fancy gadget that they will likely return a few months later after they are bored with it. edit: OP, looks like they changed the promo code on the site. The old one still "seems" to work though if you plug it in. Last edited by NatalieSha; 01-16-2013 at 06:52 AM.. |

Looks like this may not be free much longer. Hopefully people with financial difficulties still have some way to obtain this technology.
I saw some articles saying that CaptionCall may no longer offer their phones for free in the near future due to new FCC regulations that are about to kick in. Quoted from the FCC website:

Sounds to me like they will still offer it free, but you will just have to have something from an audiologist stating that you need an IP-CTS (CaptionCall phone in this case) device to communicate over the phone.
Otherwise, if you opt to pay the $75 for the device, then you can "self-certify" which sounds like you just verbally agree that you are hard of hearing or maybe sign something. Looks like this kicks in in March. |

It's no wonder my company has a very high turnover rate while otherwise being a pretty decent place to work. Don't get me wrong, the service is great and if used properly can be a godsend for people with hearing loss. It is a pleasure captioning a call for people who you can tell actually need it and when the pace is reasonable and the people speak somewhat clear it is remarkable how accurate the voice recognition software picks up my voice and relays it to the client. The delay of 3-4 seconds is because there is the information passing through multiple lines and software that just isn't as good as one would hope. There is also the occasional time when someone such as myself needs to take a drink or sneeze. This is the disadvantage of being human . In comparison, a 100% computerized service will never compare to a live speaker because people do not all speak alike(or clear) and most all phone calls have some static or points when people are breaking up which the computer would just put some random word in it's place while a live speaker can at least hit a macro to tell the client the phone is breaking up. Take for example the youtube transcript program. When videos are showing people arguing or talking unclear and with music in the background going on it isn't accurate at all. Here is a video called "Hillbilly Couple Fighting On Drugs" warning NSFW http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKknw8L3ZD0. The transcript program doesn't even come close. Try to imagine sitting at your desk in a loud and busy call center and getting a call that you have to repeat verbatim and it sounds like that. The sad thing is, around 1/3 of the calls coming in are from people just like that. The issue is phone companies are looking to expand and boost profits at the expense of their employees sanity and well being. They make is so easy to qualify that anyone can get a free phone. But because more clients equals more government funding for the company and a more recognizable name we all know that will never change. Instead it becomes the responsibility of the people to avoid taking advantage of programs that they don't deserve or legitimately qualify for. It might seem like taking advantage of a government funded program is not going to make a difference because the government would just piss that money away anyways, but there might be innocent bystanders who suffer such as people like myself.
