Using AT&T iPhone 5 (a1428) in Japan & Korea

Hello experts on all things digital,

Can I get 3G data speeds with an unlocked AT&T GSM phone (a1428) in Japan and Korea?

I understand that I would need the unlocked Verizon model (a1429) to get LTE speeds in Japan and Korea because of the bands they operate on.

But will I at least be able to pop in a GSM SIM card and get at least 3G data speeds?

I'm going on the following information:
1) http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/
2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List...E_networks

I've been googling for a few hours, but I've only found people concerned with LTE.

BTW, why didn't Apple just make one single phone instead of three? Just curious.

Hey look: I'm #2 in Bing!

Yes you should at least get 3G depending on what service carrier you use in those countries. I was in Vietnam during the summer and I was able to get 4G on my iPhone though they don't have LTE yet.

Apple has a chart for different carriers and services [apple.com] available in different countries using the iPhone.

Also, you can just buy an unlock code (which is permanent and easy to unlock) from ebay for like less than $10 now for your ATT iphone 5 and not have to get an Verizon one.

I've traveled to Japan and Korea at least ten times with my AT&T iPhones over the years without any difficulty. I have an AT&T plan called "Unlimited International Data Roaming" which works fine there. I haven't tried local SIM cards, only AT&T

I'd be using a local sim card, that's why I'm buying an unlocked phone. Would definitely be cheaper.

Thanks for the info, game4life.
