2 x GTX580s IMO are not as good as one GTX590. While SLI can be a good thing on cheap cards once a person crosses into high end why should a person have to deal with micro-stutter, games/apps that don't support SLI, having to buy more expensive MBs to handle it, potential driver issues with games that do and most importantly limited RAM in most cases. 2 x 2GB GTX680 SLI cards only have access to 2GB compared to the 4GB on the GTX690.

Also there is generally more power consumption/heat/noise when running SLI which can offset some of the cost savings over time.

No, look at the benchmarks. GTX 680's in SLI will outperform a single GTX 690. There's no opinion here or anything that has to do with price. I don't care about any other factor than the performance of the setup. Heat can be managed with good cooling, and power is the least of my concerns. I checked the benchmark comparisons here.

I ordered myself the EVGA 680 FTW 4GB model cause I want to use high res texture packs for games.

As far as SLI compatibility, I've been using GTS 250's in SLI for 2 years now and I've been able to play a lot of games maxed out, until I upgraded from 2x 1080p monitors to 2x 1440p monitors. Now I can only play Borderlands 2 on medium settings :c

The 680 should fix this though.

Even though I'm not looking into this card in particular, thanks for the info! I bought a GTX 580 (1536 MB 364-bit) so I'm guessing that's 2GB card. I'm thinking about buying one to SLI it but not sure what the performance benefits would be versus leaving it be, or versus upgrading to high 600 series. I have an i7 Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz so I would think it can handle the SLI portion.

Sell your 580 for $200 on tech forums, buy 670. From my experiencing of sli/crossfire, I promised my self to never do it again. It's fine and dandy if your cards can push past 60 fps, but when your tech gets older and chugs on new games, it starts to stutter like crazy. Only one cards for me now

I haven't really experienced stutter with my GTS 250 SLI setup. The only thing I notice is new games like Borderlands 2 will only run at like 35fps on medium settings. That was expected though, lol. Everything else has been 100% stable in my experience. Did you overclock at all?

I just got a msi 7850 from amazon a couple days ago. How does this card compare to the one offered in this thread? Looking purely on the benchmarking, the 670 beats it hands down...

If you're gaming at 1920x1200, and you expect things to be maxed out and still run 60+ FPS with AA and all the fixin's, then no. Just, no.

If you want to compromise on settings but still game at higher resolution, then you buy a 7770
