Excellent. I missed the $299 they ran close to thanksgiving. Jumped right on this one. Can't wait for my sx50 to come now. This will be the 4th canon powershot I've owned starting with the S2IS. No second thoughts on any. Great quality and even better picture.

I would check a few amazon reviews before buying either. I have the sx40 and I'm dissatisfied with the image quality. I prefer that I can shoot raw without the hack. the jpg image quality are far inferier to any SLR. I'd get the cheapest SLR over this if you have the money. the sx50 is able to shot raw without the hack. Seriously folks, the zoom isn't something you'll be using frequently unless you really have such need. Hiking isn't one of those situations. I originally purchased the sx40 because i didn't want to lug my sub $1000 SLR with lens combo... but after viewing the images, I'd say stick with an SLR and go with a 24-70 or 28-75 Tamron.
I will say that the sx40 is ultra wide and ultra long... i hate shooting with the hacked firmware, and even then, the IQ is worst than the T4i or even 20D. What killed it was that I can't manually zoom in and out by the lens as compared to an SLR which proved very convenient. Since I infrequently use the ultra zoom of the sx40, and the IQ doesn't meet my standard, I'd get a small camera and skip this or go for a SLR. |

I am not sure how much money you would have saved. The Canon 1D retailed for $5,500 and my first non-professional digital cost me over 1 grand. The cameras sitting in your closet including mine are lessons learned. All of my Canon cameras can take awesome pictures but once again, it depends on how you are using them, the type of pictures you are taking, your professional experience and your knowledge of digital photography. If you have some pictures on Getty Images then you must know somethng. You either learn from a professional or you learn yourself, either way it will cost you in some form or fashion. |

Good camera! I also have the Kodak Z990 and they both have their pros/cons. I slightly favor the IQ of the Z990 for macro (also shoots RAW), but the Canon is a more refined camera.
I scored big time on a Target close out deal for the SX40..was listed at $214. and since the box was open (but camera unused), I spoke to the store manager and he offered a 25% further discount. I countered with 50%..he took it! My BEST SD of 2012! Ok, sorry for bragging.... |
