I think you're missing the point. The Canon lens from this deal is better than the Tamron you linked. Period. How much better, and more importantly whether it's worth the price premium is different for every person. Some people pay their mortgages with their camera equipment, and to them, the image quality and build quality differences are well worth the $500. A single photo may be the difference between a sale or between a repeat customer and a one-timer. Others are shooting the zebra at the zoo, or their kids at the park and are completely content with the Tamron.

The assumption that L-series buyers are simply vain is .. well, asinine.

You must have gotten a bad 70-300L. I went from the 70-200 F4 IS to the 70-300L, and wouldn't go back, ever.

This lens always confused me. L pricing to shoot at f5.6? I guess if you really need to get to 300mm, but bleh. What aperture is it at 200?

Very good price for this lens. If I had not ordered the 70-200mm f/4L IS, I would jump to this one.

One of the best zoom lens, I got it from canon refurbished. It is sharper than 70-200mm F/4L IS. also smaller and better contrast and color but heavier. This is the best deal for it so far.

I bought this lens in Sept. for around $1250. It is heavy, but the IQ is great. I got it from Adorama, and I thought I scored a good deal. Now, I am a little sad to see the price drops to this low. However, I am still happy with the lens.

The nifty fifty (1.8) is great... for the money. It's a great lens for $99. But if you're springing for a 5D3, you should be pairing it with the 1.4 or the 1.2L.

Maybe wait until you can compare the two, in my case the 70-200 L4 IS was better.
