Even that "Daemon" thing in "/etc/rc.conf" is also not supported anymore. So this Samba article [archlinuxarm.org] needs to be updated with the working alternative in the "starting the server" section .I spent almost 30 minutes in figuring out what's wrong with /etc/rc.conf and finally just skipped that part

We need to figure out how to edit start-up script to include Samba start-up and mounting of the USB drives. As of running PMS on Pogo, I don't think it is going to work, not for me at least. PMS needs nice GUI so I am able to correct incorrect matches and maybe enter my own metadata to my titles and then it is supposed to be at least Core 2 Duo class machine so it will be able to do transcoding for the Android clients. I just don't see Pogo as capable of such tasks. Perhaps some sort of powerful yet not power-hungry Linux machine would do instead of Windows. But not our beloved ArchLinux Pogo. |

In other words, the two commands below do the same thing: # systemctl start smbd nmbd and # rc.d start samba // or /etc/rc.d/samba start the difference is systemctl works on a fully updated arch linux (with kernel >3.xx) and you can't use rc.d anymore. Once you run systemctl start smbd nmbd, check to see if samba is working: # ps -A | grep smbd // to make sure the program is running # netstat -tupa | grep smbd // to make sure the program is listening on the network instead of just unix sockets. and if yes then it's ready to accept connection requests. |

You seem to be an expert. Any words of wisdom about making Samba to automatically run on start-up and also automatically mount attached USB drives? |

![]() Either connect a Windows machine on LAN to keep PMS running or better yet, skip Roku and just connect a laptop to the TV (VGI or HDMI) by "extending monitor" and play movies in your fav media player directly from \\ALARM\xxx folder ![]() BTW, by any chance do you know how to at least check if Samba service/server is running or not? Edit: I see teetee already answered this

Another point: have you seen Plex movie client? It is glorious, I am telling you. All the info about each movie + thumbnail. Much better than going thru the file system. Last edited by Bagira; 01-12-2013 at 12:06 PM.. |

http://slickdeals.net/f/5753232-P...st56604828 pogoplug doesn't have a BIOS to detect the USB devices that are connected at boot time for boot order designation. It's up to uboot (the boot loader for arch) to choose which drive will be the /dev/sda1 (or whatever the device assigned for / ) when pogoplug gets turned on. It can be the correct one but most likely it's not (otherwise we wouldn't have issues). With the pogoplug models that come with an internal SATA port(P21, B01) there is a solution for activating the boot code to use the SATA device as the 1st device everytime but since those pogos are oxnas chip based, they are still using linux kernel 2.6.x and no systemd support. I am not saying systemd is much better than sysv/rc.d but in order to get the perfect boot everytime, you will have to find a way to get a SATA drive connected to the pogo (power and all), modify the code (archlinxu forum), and be ok with only 128MB ram for those pogo models. I would rather just stick with the E02 model that has 3.x kernel and systemd support. And if I really need to reboot the server I will just have to live with unplugging all drives except for the system drive and inserting them back in afterwards. |

OK, so thanks to everyone's instructions, loaded ArchLinux, and Samba. Got the attached USB drive to Pogo to show up as ALARM under Network in Windows 7. Awsome!! I can see all my files.
Question - (1) I am unable to pull up anything on 192.168.X.XXX on my browser under Windows or Android. The Message I get is - This webpage is not available - connection attempt to 192.168.X.XXX was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured. (2) Also, How do I pull up the pogo on my Android devices? Thank you all for your kindness to Linux Noobs. |
