I was in Dillard's this morning and the cashier told me they are definitely having their 50% off sale on New Year's Day. This discount applies to previously discounted and clearanced merchandise.

In the past, this sale was for B&M and available online as well. If you plan to shop online, get your items into your cart early and check out as quickly as you can; things tend to go out of stock pretty fast.

My store normally opens at 10 but the cashier thought they would be opening early, 8 or 9, so be sure to check with YOUR store about their hours on New Year's Day.

Dilliard's is definitely making some questionable decisions lately in regards to customer service. Not only is the 3-day return thing just nuts (and yes, they enforce this during Christmas gift giving...way to encourage purchases elsewhere), but on returns paid via bank cards, which should be same as cash, they only give you a refund as merchandise cards. It took some forcing of the issue with a manager to get cash back out of those.

My recommendation, pay with cash or credit card only if doing this sale, do NOT use a bank card if there is the slightest chance you might need to return an item for whatever reason.

I agree that the 3 day return policy is a little irritating, but keep in mind it is only for items that are 65% off or more, as was previously stated by both myself and another poster, and in all honesty, Dillard's has a good reason to change their return policy. Although I no longer work at Dillard's (thank goodness!), having worked 3 straight years of New Year's Day 50% sales, I saw the same situations arise time and time again. People would buy winter items at full price months earlier, than bring in 1000's of dollars worth of return on Jan 1, knowing that a) the items were going to be at their max lowest clearance price by then and b)they would get 50% off this max lowest price. Although Dillard's return policy says that they do not do price adjustments, and the managers had discretion to deny these returns, these customers would throw such a public display (that my 15 month old would be proud of, btw) that the returns and rebuys would be done to appease them. Dillard's lost too much money on these people, and that was the beginning of their new return policy. I'm in no way trying to defend Dillard's, they are not a great company to work for, but you can place the blame for this new 3-day policy directly on their shoulders. I am not a fan of it either, as I personally prefer to try clothes on at home not at a store, but I know my size well enough (as far as Dillard's clothing brands) that I can guesstimate what will be okay for me and can reduce what I need to return. As far as Dillard's sees it, the good outweighs the bad.

Regarding the bank card return, what I am assuming happened is that the merchandise was returned before the transaction was completely processed by either Dillard's, the bank, or both. If the debit transaction had posted and then you returned the item, it could be processed as a normal credit to your card, but since the debit hadn't posted yet, Dillard's computer system could only return it for store credit. Same things happens with checks and returning items before they clear. Take this with a grain of salt though, I usually use credit cards and haven't used a bank debit card at a department store in years, haha.

Not sure if they are considered a "store brand" but they are exclusive to Dillard's, just like Gianni Bini and Antonio Melani on the women's side Smilie.

For your first part, I get it. It's like when people would buy a lawn mower in the spring at Wal-mart, then return it in the fall. That prompted changes to Wal-marts return policy. Costco had included in their return for any reason TVs at one time resulting in people purchasing a TV, using it for years, then returning it to get a bigger / better model at the same or even less cost. However, this 3 day thing I think personally is out of line. If it only applies to things that are 65% off, I don't see how it prevents your example (buy clothes well in advance, return / rebuy on 50% additional day). Supposedly they paid a higher than 65% price at that time and could return the item if they so wanted. Nobody else hit with returns I'm aware of has implemented such a draconian return policy sure to limit anyone shopping for clothing as gifts during the holiday season. And I'm sorry, but Dillard's, while having nice clothes and one of my preferred places for suit shopping, is not somewhere I EVER buy anything NOT on sale. That's like shopping at Kohl's with no percentage off.

In regards to the part I've quoted, they changed it from the way it used to operate. All bank / debit card sales are now only given merchandise store credits on returns. It does not go back to the bank, regardless of time frame, nor are they paid back / treated as cash transactions. You have to "pitch a fit" to a manager to have any hope of not getting stuck with a merchandise credit rather than cash on the return.

My significant other was a department manager at Dilliard's as well. If they're counting on changes such as the above two to further help the company which has some significant challenges going forward, I think they're going to see the exact opposite. Heck, she had to return an item from Christmas same time as I did, and she couldn't do it where / when I did. The mall here has the woman's store and men's store (and why cookware / bedroom stuff is located in the men's beats me) separated in two different areas of the mall. They made her go clear down the mall to do her return there even though it had a return tag simply because they didn't want to walk the merchandise over themselves! You do not solve your problems by decreasing customer service which both of those changes clearly do.

As a person who has a debit card but NEVER uses it

why would you pay for anything that has even a remote chance or being returned/refunded with a debit card?

In the case of Dillards...the best best( the SD one) is to have/use a Dillards CC and accrue the points and get the 10% off one day offer
I am using it on January 1 and it will save me at least $150 off the already 50% off the reduced price of furniture

The other case would be to use a rewards card and get the credit towards airline miles etc

Ofcourse this mean paying any revolving balance off every month
In the case of Dillards furniture you can take 12 months to pay..no interest..if needed

So....tell me why one would use a debit card when there is any chance or return/refund and tie up their own money?

It has been a month or two since I returned something to Dillard's, but I almost always pay with a credit card and have never had an issue with the funds being returned to this card. The only time I ever got merchandise credit instead of my original tender back was when I had to return skincare that had gone bad before I opened it and it was after the normal return period. As I said before, they may have changed the way their system handles returns, but I don't see how, if you return something within the return guidelines stated on the back of the receipt, that they cannot give you back your original form of tender. I'm going to find a receipt from Dillard's just to double-check what it says though... Smilie

as a real life example..items that are 65% off are typically old/last season merchandise

I guess their mentality is since they have discounted so much they dont want an item from 2010 being returned in 2012....their discount reflects the fact that it is old/discontinued/last season merchandise

Clearly...the extreme discounting reflects that fact

I guess one has to have some expectation when they buy an item for a small percentage of its retail

On another note...if you ever shot their outlet stores....all items are final sale
Something I am ok with considering the quality of their merchandise

Let me know when I can fine the same quality of merchandise( and the discounts Dillards has) and I will shop there

I am a male and wear a lot of Ralph Lauren/Polo and Dillards typically has about 1000% better selection that Macy's

I think in women's wear they have significantly better merchandise than Macy;s as well

As I said before Dillards merchandise quality in menswear is just a notch below a Nordstorm

That quality of merchandise at those prices...I am willing to live their 65%( or more) return policy
