I bought some of these a while ago and wasn't impressed. They are very low quality and one of them died a couple weeks after I purchased them. They might be worth $1.50 a piece but that's about it.

Unethical employees or lots of shoplifters?

I successfully checked out with 2, but then got a call 15 minutes later that there are actually none in store.

I call BS on the employees, but it's not a Lowes specific issue it seems either, it has happened to me in my city with multiple stores.

I feel it is pretty frequent that when an employee goes to pickup a online order and they see the deal and simply hide it or put it aside for them to get himself later. How else can an inventory of 7 mysteriously go to zero?

The inventory software at some stores is sometimes updated only once a day, usually during the night. So, the 7 in stock might have been there at 2:00 AM, but were sold off the shelves at 9:00 AM, but the inventory wasn't updated by the time you checked.

Even if updated constantly, their inventory computer doesn't know if there are 7 in stock but not on the shelf, maybe in someone's shopping cart when they haven't checked out yet, or maybe in a different stock location, and the employee isn't willing to look for them, so they just tell you there aren't any in stock.
