NOT a good price = I've been buying 42" 1080p tv's for a couple YEARS cheaper than this - plenty of posts on this website have led me to them... back around thanksgiving target was selling their westinghouse 39 inch screens for 199 = shortly before that I got an isymphony 42inch for the same 199.00 price
-299 is Barely a fair price... certainly not a good one - and DEFINITELY NOT a slick deal! (if it were a SMART tv or a 3d that would be different)
A TV is a TV -I dont care who makes it - size, resolution and hertz is all that matters - 'durability' 'quality' 'name brand = all crap. I repair these for a living and see no VIABLE reason to spend extra cash on (most) of these low level entry model televisions - as I stated briefly above it would be different if it was a SMART tv or a 3d model - as those have intuitive menu systems and require a solid company behind them to provide updates.
If you feel name brand is really that important then I cant fault you - as companies spend fortunes to get their name out there... but the fact remains - the parts inside are made by the same generic Chinese manufacturing plants, they may be BRANDED with a 'good name' (which gives you a better customer service experience MAYBE... any old piece of junk can get a good warranty on it...)
It is amazing how many of you haters have seen fit to crawl up here and spew your rude comments... In a site where people are supposed to point out good deals - I can assure you that this is NOT a great deal it is only a FAIR / not ripping you off too bad deal - A SLICK deal on a TV like this would be DOOR BUSTER, BLACK friday pricing.
Back in 2008 these 42" tv's were running around $450 at best - I bought a Digital Lifestyles from here (back before officially joining the site) = you can find them in your Archives.
Around september 2012 I picked up a Westingouse 39" 1080p at target for $199 as well.
Now those of you who want to go back and claim that 'panasonic' is such a great company and their televisions are so much better than these other companies... your wrong... period. Every company on this planet makes CRAP or Good and sometimes even a GREAT product - but name alone will not distinguish one from the other - not when you are talking about ENTRY LEVEL televisions - standard simple things... If you want to compare 3d tv's - or other types of technology then YEA = sure there can be brands that are better (Any Pandigital product is going to be sub par to any Galaxy or Asus transformer brand android tab... thats just a fact - that has nothing to do with Televisions - )
A tv is a simple thing - Screen size, resolution and types of inputs available are the only things most people should be concerned with. Most humans do not have good enough eyes to detect the subtle differences in hertz rates or color gamuts, cant tell the difference between a deep true black and an off black / gray cheaper model when it comes to contrast ratios... Hell some people cant even tell the difference from Standard definition to High definition (I've met QUITE a lot of 60+ year old people who just cant see it - side by side looking at the difference their eyes just cant see the difference)
So - if you have great eyesite and want the best of the best - and are willing to pay more for it - good for you - I do not fault you -
But this deal - for a standard 42" panasonic is NOT a good deal.
I've droned on enough... Chris2 - Your comic skills could use some work.
So, you have NOT "been buying 42" 1080p tv's for a couple YEARS cheaper than this". In all these "YEARS," you have found ONE (loosely)comparable TV for $70 cheaper. Just so everyone has the facts. Carry on, all.
