I wonder how many of my former and current jobs would you consider cruel and unusual punishment and/or revenge. perhaps you give a quick list of job traits which would make a job "revenge" or cruel and unusual. working in the elements (rain, cold, heat)? lifting heavy items/boxes? being on feet all day? again, please be specific as i am trying to determine which jobs unincarcerated people do all day long which you think would be "cruel and unusual/revenge" jobs.

i am not sure what you want me to respond too. you seem to state that over restrictin of luxury (TV, internet, music) could be revenge and is therefor bad? just trying to understand your position. So you would be against a system that rewarded working prisoners with TV, internet and music access while heavily restricting such activities in those who refuse to work?

I see no reason to keep say most 80 year old men or seriously physically sick people in prison other than vengeance and revenge.

She had been involved in helping other prisoner for many years. Many many many people asked George W Bush to commute her sentence to life, yet the good governor chose to end her life. I consider that the opposite of pro-life.

I believe vengeance and revenge are perfectly acceptable reasons.

My point was this: often things like TV and internet or library makes a better management of the prisoners and it is easier to control them. I also do not think things like TV are luxury at all. If we agree to that, then I do not see a reason to deny them these other than revenge or unusual and cruel punishment.

I respect your being straightforward. I just disagree with you.

For full disclosure: I might personally engage in revenge and vengeance, say if my loved one was harmed but I cannot in good conscience support it as a policy.

I don't think the death penalty is generally a good deterrent OR punishment. It's not a good deterrent because it's not treated as such - after many years of appeals (in the US), sentences are carried out in virtual secrecy in "humane" ways. The death penalty does not serve as a good punishment because it's over instantaneously and peacefully. Change the circumstances of the sentence and I might support it, but for someone to put another human being through such torture then be given the gift of a peaceful death, sorry, that doesn't cut the cake.

Government shouldn't be in that business. There is no way they can fairly or impartially decide who should or shouldn't die for their crimes, or for that matter, that they even committed them for 100% sure.

Government's responsibility should be to protect others from becoming another victim. Serious violent crimes should be penalized with imprisonment for life, with no possibility of parole. No matter how remorseful or rehabilitated the offender appears to be.

First, I said I am not sure. Second, I did not mention "necessity." Third, I have said several times that things like TV actually help the prison officials and therefore should be provided. Fourth, I just do not think TV is a luxury and I am willing to bet that there is a ruling somewhere that says prisoners are entitled to access to such things as books, TV, newspapers, internet, or radio.

If one has to abide intolerance to be considered tolerant, then the word loses it's meaning.

when they took away this womans RIGHT to watch TV, they forteit the right to watch tv whenever they want. please post a link to a ruling stating that prisoners have the right to watch endless amounts of TV whenever the want. Even IF there is a ruling, i am CERTAIN, that prison officials have the right to restrict access as they see fit.

Kids learn very quickly not to touch the hot stove top, but nobody worries to much about stubbing their toe on things laying on the ground.

By making prison harsh and less desirable you create an incentive to not take part of actions that would put you there. I think this is the most common sense notion I can even imagine. Why do we finish H.S. and continue on? Because we don't wanna work at McDonald's! Now if high school drop outs could be doctors and make the equivalent salary.. do you think we'd have more high school drop outs? So.. Prison should be painfully dismal and as unpleasant as possible. You should be forced to mandatory labor to pay for your stay, food and armed guards that watch your every move.
