Have you looked into VW TDI's? They have the Golf TDI, Jetta TDI and Passat TDI. Tho I'm sure the Passat is above the $30k mark but the golf and jetta are a lot more reasonable. They get fantastic gas mileage, clean diesels.

I'm too lazy for math but I don't think in the long run a 25k prius at 50mpg is a much better deal then a 33mpg sonata at 20k. |

You also never have to smog a prius and when you go to sell it there will be a line of people waiting to pay 22k for it instead of half of what you bought it for.
