Guess you are getting thumbs down from the folks that are comparing a Honda to a Lexus.

This is good to see. The 512GB 830 was over $600 for a VERY long time; I remember when getting it for $550 was an awesome deal. To see the 512GB 840 Pro at ~$450 so soon after its release implies its price may reach reasonable levels in a much shorter time.

I see people are giving this a thumbs down already, but the 512GB 840 Pro is both the fastest drive available *and* it's the fastest by a substantial margin. If you're looking for this exact product and/or want the very best 512GB SSD available, this is an excellent price.

Yeah and in a year when it is down at $300 and the market price is $360-375 they will still be complaining they want it for $250. A slick deal is really when an item (that you find useful) is priced below market. Considering the higher capacity drives typically go for a premium on a per GB basis and $224 was a hot price for the 256 GB version this is a pretty sweet deal.

I don't think it is worth the headache to do the minor upgrade from 830 to 840 Pro in having to wipe clean you current drive - load the new one and sell the 830. Sounds like a lot of work for a marginal gain -- plus you are still out on the used 830 as you won't get top dollar for it most likely and are still at the same capacity level.

Good price, but you should get 2 of the 256 GB and raid 0 them together for 512 GB but you got double the speed of the 512 GB SSD one for about the same price.

The 256 GB is also on sale for 229 bucks atm.

Raid 0 has pros an cons regarding drive failure (one failure corrupts both drives) but more importantly where hard drive bays are limited (mobile applications) what you are suggesting doesn't apply as most people are limited to one hard drive bay.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. Used 512GB 830s on ebay wemt anywhere from $300-$375 on ebay in the past 2 months. I think if I could get $325 for my used 830, the additional $125 payout for the 840 Pro might be worth it... To at least say I have the fastest drive out there. ;-)

I bought this drive after using the Samsung 830 SSD on my MacBook Pro. That drive was fast and super reliable, hopefully the streak will continue with this one. On typical day to day operations, I don't really notice a difference between the two. Benchmarks using Black Magic Speed Tests show the following:

Samsung 830 (256GB):

Read: 468 MB/sec
Write: 389 MB/sec

Samsung 840 Pro (256GB):

Read: 512 MB/sec
Write: 451 MB/sec

If you are thinking about upgrading from an existing SSD, depending on your usage, it may not be worth it. But if you are going from a traditional HDD, go for it. You won't regret it.
