Thread Details

I've been using prepaid phone service for the last 2 years switching between SimpleMobile, Straight Talk, and T-Mobile $30 Walmart plan depending on what phone I use as I switch out every few months.

My question is for those of you using Straight Talk, which I've noticed quite a few SDers use.

Does anyone take the route of purchasing a "$45 for phone + 1 month service" every month and use the PIN code for your own smartphone while building up a collection of those freebie flip phones?
I got a great deal trading in my Nexus 4 for an iPhone 5 so I will be switching to Straight Talk's AT&T again next month.

Why would you do that? It's wasteful and potentially more expensive as you typically have to pay an extra 10 or 20 dollars for the flip phone. Also, the flip phones typically come with a $30 refill card, which only gives you 30mb of data, whereas with your smart phone you probably want the $45 card with Unlimited (~2GB) of data.

Actually, you're absolutely wrong. You can get a free flip phone with the $45 unlimtied plan. You can also get a large percentage CB from the right site.

HOWEVER, ST will eventually ban you from ordering more phones. My girlfriend and I eventually got banned and we can't order more phones with our card or address.....so be careful. We can still use the refill cards on our account (got about a year's worth of service this way), but now we can't order them to our address. I'd stick with doing 4-5 a year this way if I were you. :-)

So it does work!
Guess the only thing is to make sure which ones are AT&T and which are T-Mobile so I get the service I want for the initial activating SIM card

I'm not sure that you can use the SIM card from the free phone in a different phone. I read somewhere that they were locked to the phone they come in. I don't know -- I never tried to verify that.

I have never had pre-paid service before, how is the call quality and coverage? So you bought an unlocked Nexus 4 phone and now traded it for an unlocked Iphone 5? May I ask where you bought your original unlocked Nexus 4 (I'm looking for one now). Thanks

Call quality is the same as whatever big company the prepaid is an MVNO of (i.e. T-Mobile or AT&T). I live in Southern California so I never really have any coverage issues but I believe that prepaid MVNOs don't offer roaming whereas the bigger companies do.

I got my Nexus 4 through Google Play. Good luck finding one!

I did something else, similar though, and I made GREAT money during Christmas through Straight Talk...until I got banned.

Where do you find the "$45 for phone + 1 month service"? I went to Walmart and was not able to find this deal from the Straight Talk kiosk. So just to clarify, you paid $45 and got a Flip phone and 1 months of wireless phone service through Straight Talk?
