3A is less charging current than a laptop charger, and just 0.9A more than an iPad charger to put this in perspective. This is a trickle charger or maintenance charger. This is not what you want to use to quickly charge your batter after it dies.
OTOH, for deep cycle marine batteries, etc, charging more slowly is good for them so this may be nice.. It does sound a bit high for a maintenance charger. I wouldn't want more than 1.5 to 2 A for one...which I need for my old IROC in the garage. |

Anyone else chime in.... why are most floats so much lower amperage than this one... will a 3amp float cause any problems? I ended up buying one. Reviews indicate that it does come with quick connector. I like the percentage output so I know how my battery is doing before it's dead. The HF model I have just has a little red light and I have no idea what it's doing at any given time.

I have one of these and use it on my UTV as a battery maintainer/tender. That's what my primary use is, and it does it fantastically. If you want it to charge a completely dead battery it will, it will just take a while. 3 Amps is plenty enough juice to charge a dead battery in good condition.

It says
"This unit is controlled by a microprocessor and programmed to not allow overcharging" So I have to assume at full current it will give you 3 amps then adjust as it seems fit. It probably goes to sleep when the battery is fully charged and wakes up when the voltage drops. The advantage is quicker charging if its dead, and also not too fast because really quick charging is not best for a battery Your cell phone gives a max watts of .6 watts and it adjusts lower the closer you are to the cell site. |

Excessive charging current (+10A) will shorten the life of the battery. 1-3A is ideal. I have an ancient 2/10/50A car battery charger with an ammeter. I always use the 2A setting when charging. Initially, the ammeter will show about 3A with a 1/2 charged battery, but after about 3 hours, the reading will show less than 0.5A. The charging voltage at this time is around 14-14.2VDC. |
