More seriously, would having an account where you transfer the required cash and a debit card not do the trick? That's what I'd do if I had a child.

for envelope, i think you can request them (i have some from few year ago) - or may be they dont offer them anymore. but with deposit via scanning, dont really see a need to send a cheque. |

not all banks offer free checks. I know chase offers free checks for customers in their "better" accounts... They're usually 18.95 for chase though. This is a better deal considering you can customize the checks instead of getting plain bank issued checks

Some business owners in a little town near me prefer cash or checks over credit/debit cards. A few don't even accept credit/debit cards. Since they are small businesses, they take a hit every time someone pays with a card.

And many stores will automatically print the check for ya - yell at the person in front of your line next time to take advantage of such feature. Might educate 'em like I just did for you...

other times I'm in a rush. so I'll just quickly stamp the back of several checks & stuff them in a postage-paid envelope. saves a lot of time. |

 You'd trust a debit card to a kid in elementary school? Also, most schools won't even accept debit cards for many things.
