have you tried the cam with a PC? that would help rule out if its the cam that is the problem

well my first instinct is to say that it is a mac related issue, but testing it with a PC would help to determine that.

If you have any iOS devices (iphone, ipod touch, ipad) try a variety of cam viewing apps see if any work differently.

A lot of these cameras only tend to support audio with active x or java controls vomit

As I alluded, there are apps like this: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/c...51665?mt=8
that can do sound. There ought to be a stand alone a desktop app that should be able to do this (it's possible at least).

EDIT:EvoCam [evological.com] is a paid ($30, less here [mupromo.com]) mac app that should do the job. There are probably others, this is what I found in a quick search.
