factoring inflation into place, hiding money into ur mattress means he is losing money every day. When he one day pulls out his $10k from his mattress he'll be able to only afford half of what he could have bought with it 10 yrs prior.

think about this:
-people invest in gold or silver as a way to "hedge their bets" that paper money becomes worthless as gov's continue to overspend.
-If it got to the point that paper money was worthless, we'd likely be in some revolt and chaotic society
-If we did get to that point, i'd rather own some canned food, shelters and guns....your silver and gold won't save you nor feed you.

Therefore, gold and silver are nothing but interim hedges, but really of no value (other than perceived) in either extreme (perfectly run government where everyone is happy or no gov and everything is chaos)

I've had a crapload of money in NLY for years. It was $6 14 years ago. It topped out at $20 and is now hovering in the $14-$15 range. Yes, the yield is down to a crappy 12.8% now but it was at 20% for a few years. Even if the stock price goes down to $0 now. The interest I've made off of it over the years has made it incredibly profiitable.

Something like the Oakmark Equity & Income fund is OK if you want meager returns that may or may not keep up with inflation. Pick individual stocks if you want to actually make money.

Any body thinks about this one

Have you ever picked a stock that lost you money? I'm guessing you have. people only post about their good picks. It's like people who go to Vegas.

Anyone can say "I made this on this stock" - that's meaningless going forward cause it's no guarantee even the same stock will be a good investment.

If people want a low-risk investment, I suggested the Oakmark fund.

In the last 17 years, they've had only 2 years where they lost money, and the other 15 years they made 8 to 26% per year.

Well those people aren't me. Check the massive SD archive. I am most upfront about ownership in the stocks I've lost money on. Big among them, HPQ and AMD. I've also been exposing the joys of NLY for years.

Who only has 1 stock? I have a portfolio of stocks that many would confuse with a mutual fund. Thus risk is spread. And NLY isn't my biggest gainer by a longshot. It's the safest gainer. They have been rock solid with double digit yield for years.

The 8-26% figure you are quoting is misleading. The distribution is much more heavily concentrated at 8% and not at 26%. From the horse's mouth.

Their 10 year return annual return is 8.26%. The 5 year is 3.84%.

NLY's 5 year average annual yield is 13.962%.

They had a bad year in 2008, skews the 5 year. Their 17 year return is 10.05%. Not bad for a low-risk investment. You can't say NLY is low-risk, look at all the articles predicting a crash in their yield. - you don't need to do any research either, I'm sure you do a lot of research.
