In for another one... I bought one a few years ago (used for $500) and the 3D remap with Trinnov is amazing! Don't buy this for video processing, although I use it with HDMI for both audio and video, video is pass through only.

It is one of the BEST surround sound processors for audio! I had a $1500 Onkyo 9.2 preamp, high end Denon and Marantz, Trinnov beats them all (Audyssey ...), by a long shot! You'd have to move up to Anthem or ADA's $10,000 Trinnov processor to do better... not in my budget! WARNING, it is not the most user friendly but the audio quality is worth the hassle!

BTW, these were going refurb on eBay for around $350 plus shipping a few weeks ago.
Bought one just from this. It's even better than the XT32 on the Denon 4311? XT32 made a huge difference over XT and lesser Audyssey versions. I paid +$1,200 for that receiver, and I thought that was a good buy. I'd sell my 4311 in a heartbeat if that's the case.

Prior to the Sherwood, I had a Marantz AV7005, Denon 3805 and an Onkyo PR-SC5508. The Onkyo had better features, on screen volume, networking, 9.2, however, the Sherwood Newcastle sounds better (cleaner to me) and in a large room the Trinnov did the trick, far more immersive experience even with only 7.1 (actually 7.4 in my system). For the price, it's a no brainer!!!

My current system: Sherwood 972, Cinepro amplifier, Klipsch THX Ultra2 speakers with 4 Klipsch THX Ultra2 subs. Just installed 6 Clark Synthesis transducers in the seating and that made it even more fun! The second 972 will be a 5.1 system with some M&K S5000's that I picked up cheap, in a different room.

I've become a Sherwood Newcastle fanboy getting their R871 for my office, P-965 for my kitchen and outdoor speakers and another R871 for my bedroom. I believe Sherwood's parent company builds Denon and a few other brands.

Just fyi. I called the Sherwood office to ask some questions about the 972. After a little run around, I finally got the main guy on the line!! He told me to post his info for any Sherwood issues that might arise and also said that another "1saleof the day" is coming!!

His name is :
Gary Graning and his number is 210-860-9955 and his email is : gcgraning@msn.com

Good Luck!!!

They've built some of Denon's low to mid end products, but not their upper-end ones. Also some Outlaw Audio products, and other brands.

Some video issues with this model. YMMV if firmware updates help. For audio performance, and hooking your HD DVR and Blu ray directly to your display, it's a killer deal. But that pretty much negates the reason for HDMI and the HQV Reon processor.

I saw that too before buying it. I did some more research. I know we all appreciate the warning, but my understanding is that the about.com review is an old review from not long after R-972 launch in 2010.
Other reviews rave about the unit.

Someone in 2012 posted, in a new thread at one of the A/V forums, that Sherwood had done a lot with the firmware update(s) to address issues / improve performance.
In a nutshell, experts / owners can correct me if I am wrong, the major kinks have been ironed out.

A4L started offering the R-972 this year for $599.99, which is a big loss given mfg cost already, and people in audio forums were snapping them up (multiple units in some cases for other rooms) due to the high build quality, great value and awesome sound including state of the art Trinnov room correction.

Glad I got one today for half of that price before they sold out. Smilie
The timing could not have been better as I just passed on 3 other receivers in the past week after starting a search last week to replace my amazing high end receiver mainly due to needing Dolby Digital Plus and wanting to have HDMI switching on my receiver.

The only other manufacturer that features Trinnov is ADA, their models start at $10K!

Their policy is no return even when they screw up. It took 4 months to get refund from credit card for wrong item shipped; no refund for my shipping expense. LOUSY MERCHANT!Mad
It can't be repeated enough. i1ScamAday is pure suckage. You are dumber than a bag of hammers if you order a $250 refurb receiver from them.

I know the deal is dead but just curious how this compares to Onkyo 818... Got that one recently at $680 and so far it's been good, but this seems cheaper and possibly better audio?? I do want video as well though...

Yet your thoroughly detailed reason why is going to be the decision maker for someone? More often than not, the customer is a complete idiot. I've never had a problem with them.

This is Slickdeals, and it is a slick deal. Anyone with a brain would pick up a 30% off squaretrade warranty for 1 year which comes out to $26 for it. For $326, you get a warrantied receiver which has comparable processing and room correction to $1,800 receivers.

My Denon 4311 would be bought from me for $1000+ easy, Yeah, totally dumb to make money back and have nearly the same performance.

1SaleADay is a completely no-frills liquidator. They are set up to move product and that's about it. You will not get fast delivery. You will not get good customer service. You will not get knowledgeable staff. Even the product descriptions may be a little off because they are not experts on the products they sell, so it's worth researching independently before you buy. On the other hand they sometimes have excellent bargains. You're paying a fraction of the price and getting a fraction of the service. By those standards I am generally not disappointed.

Thanks OP. In for 1.
Repped.

Perfect timing.
Now I just need to sell my they-dont-make-them-like-this-anymore 63 lb THX-Ultra2 Pioneer Elite VSX-47TX (don't let the number 47 fool you, compared to some models in the current lineup with higher model numbers. The 47TX was the second or third highest model at the time ($3,000 MSRP orig) but I got it used at a nice discount, albeit still not cheap (more than double this deal) with one known knob defect that is resolved by simply using the original Pioneer remote to switch inputs.
The only reason for upgrading from my Elite (which I love) to this Sherwood Newcastle is to get ALL the latest DD and dts decoding.
I mainly just needed DD Plus decoding for my streaming movies service.

Anyway, thanks again OP!

Surprised one R-972 went for only for $337.00 on eBay, albeit just recently. A4L had them for $599.99 and they sold well, with forum members at avsforums and audioholics buying a bunch, some members bought two.
As a member said "Each unit sold to A4L represents a major $ loss for Sherwood, the retail selling price @ A4L was below the Sherwood factory FOB cost... "
I believe this at $299.99 handily beats the $319 + tax clearance Elite VSX-51TX I passed on at BB last night (and was considering picking up tonight till I read this post while doing some more research tonight).
interesting...I have one of the Pioneer VSX47tx hat I bough on Ebay about 3 years ago for $150.00
I missed this deal...but I seriously doubt this Sherwood..will come close to the sound ( and ofcourse build quality) of the old Pioneer

I have a few newer 3D capable HDMI receivers....but the reviews on this Sherwood have been mixed at best

like it was a product that really wasnt ready for market...but hey for $299(shipped)..oh well

that is doubtful you could get $1000

there are several sites selling refurbs for less than that...ones that would come with at least a year warranty
