FYI

a couple of VSX49TX receivers..the model above the VXS47TX...on ebay now for for less than $300( plus shipping)
Thanks. I'll keep tracking.
On the one hand the Elite 47TX is a great receiver (as you also noted), but on the other hand since I plan to use my receiver(s) for a significant amount of surround sound decoding, I needed something more recent with Dolby Digital Plus (etc). That is where the R-972 comes in. Plus I have always been fascinated by Sherwood's high end Newcastle line anyway.

In all likelihood I will sell the Elite for whatever I can get and if I later need a 2nd receiver (in addition to the R-972 on its way), I'll get one that can decode the latest surround sound formats.

This is a pretty nice receiver. Amp section is decent but not super. I got it from A4L earlier this year. Not sure I'd use it anywhere else but in my dedicated theater. The Trinnov is excellent, but the other stuff that was never fixed, e.g. the audio dropouts during codec switches, and the poor upscaling make it not a great choice for elsewhere. WAF was pretty low if watching regular TV and it switches from program to program with dropouts.

thanks for the update

Its seems its still somewhat flawed for everyday use.....as I think A4L only sells the units that have the latest updates

It seems that the $299 is fair...for the $599 A4L is selling them for not sure it could be worth it to me

Any unit can have the firmware pretty easily upgraded. There's a +6db bass patched firmware available for download on avsfourm or directly from Sherwood.

I don't want to knock the unit in terms of the value it provides. Honestly, I think the $599 price was fair, and I'm trying not be biased since I bought it for that. Based upon receivers currently in production and R&D indications, Trinnov will not be available at the consumer level for a few years, if ever again and definately not at this price point. The 3D remapping feature is excellent and so is the curve correction if needed.

This is however, not going to be a plug and play situation, and the setup portion takes know-how and patience. The audio dropout situation is what it is... just makes watching regular TV a nuisance. If I were going to build another viewing room I would certainly consider again.

some good points

However no matter how advanced something is...the assumption is that it will do the basics
That in itself could be part of the reason that these are on sale at 1 sale a day for $299

Any of the higher end AVR's/preamps...Denon 4520, Onkyo 5010/5509, Yamaha A3020, Pioneer SC67 are not for the faint of heart to set up
Though it can be done and the advanced functions used as well

I think if any of those units had an issue with basic functionality...which I consider TV viewing to be..it is a major coffin nail in the success of the unit

On the advanced capability of the Trinnov...I dont know
I have used about every other room correction system out there( from the Asian manufacturers anyway)..Audessey XT32, YPAO, MCACC

Since I dont listen to matrix ed channels.....its of lesser importance as I only listen to discrete audio channels and 98% HD video signals as well

Yeah, this is certainly not WAF. For those that are reading this thread, the audio dropouts are basically: The receiver when it detects a new audio codec, mutes audio for the first 3-4 seconds of the program. So when you start a movie, the first 3-4 seconds is muted, ok no big deal maybe since you start and watch.

But if you're watching regular TV, it's like program -> ad1 (3-4 seconds mute) -> ad2 (3-4 seconds mute) -> etc etc, then regular program (3-4 seconds mute). It's annoying as heck during commercials, but missing 3-4 seconds of returning to the program you're watching is way more than just annoying. This also means a lot of times if you're time shifting, e.g. fast forwarding through commercials or different points, the audio also cuts in and out. So on regular use this is an epic fail.

With regards to Trinnov, it's a unique beast. All of the room correction options you listed above will all do basic curves correction. The XT32 is a pretty impressive system too, especially with proper bass management. All can help smooth the peaks and dips that your room might introduce and give you a flatter, more balanced sound.

However, what only Trinnov has, is the ability to remap 3 dimensionally the perceived location of speakers. For example, my main viewing area is a projected 140" screen. With an 8' ceiling and using floor standing tower left and right channels, the center channel is way below the other speakers, nearly 2.5-3 feet lower than the tweeters/midrange in the towers. Trinnov 3D mapping allows the receiver to raise the perceived height of the center channel up to where you specify, and it is amazing - center channel appears to come from the center of the screen. And it does this without any matrixed or extra height channels.

It's a pro system and the only of it's kind implemented for consumers. That's what has most audiophiles excited especially since the receiver started out about ~$2K. Question is, can you live with the flaws? Market has voted no, as you can tell by the closeout prices perhaps, but for some it's great.

agreed

at the prices they are going for at A4L ...Sherwood has to be losing money on every unit sold
at $299 its just a firesale item pure and simple

I have a couple of Onkyo products that click when going back and forth from programs to commercials

The others brands I own( or have owned)..Pioneer..Yamaha..dont have this issue

interesting comment that you mentioned about the amp section of this unit not being a strong point

Maybe the best use for it is as a preamp in a dedicated home theater environment

Can't believe they still haven't shipped this!

For the steal of a deal price (as others noted, they were a deal at the A4L price which is twice as much as this flash deal) , I can't complain too much about shipping, especially since shipping is free (not bad for a 62.5 lb receiver).
I suspect at $299.99 they were trying to expedite the clearing out of the remaining inventory given the apparent 2012 corporate decision to discontinue the Sherwood Newcastle line that I read about on the forums.

Hope they ship soon though.

I would imagine they would be shipping them soon...its been about 10 days
Thats about par for the course for 1 sale a day

something tells me this $299 deal with not repeat itself....these prices indicate along with the discontinuation of this line speaks to the fact that they must have been losing their A%^ of these

I emailed them. They said wait another 3 to 5 business days. I wonder if this is an honest estimate or a canned response.

I was just checking my invoice last night and noticed that we ordered these over 2 1/2 weeks ago now (tomorrow will be three weeks).
I read the posts about 1saleaday being slow but this is getting to be a bit ridiculous...

Yep 2.5 weeks without a peep is *not* a good way to do business... but then again it may not be all 1saleaday's fault. From some of the earlier posts in this thread it looks like the receivers may be directly shipped from Sherwood-Newcastle, so they're probably responsible for the slow shipping. But that doesn't mean that 1saleaday.com shouldn't apply some pressure for their vendors to fulfill their orders in a timely manner.

Also 1saleaday isn't supposed to charge people's credit cards *before* the item is shipped. All of our credit cards were charged on Jan 4th and *NOTHING* has shipped almost 20 days later. :-(
