The only mention of any black material that I can find in the link is where they are talking about the Mann filter, which doesn't have any such external "grip" coating:

I would suspect he has a problem with his engine or some other internal fault.....or the oil analysis readings are suspect.

In your case I would definitely just use the cheapest oil that meets spec and the cheapest filters you can get. You're probably causing some wear but you will never see the results of it.

Well, it's been over 100,000 since the last test, so I wonder when the problem will rear it's ugly head? I guess I'm done here. If some of you want to save every penny on the cheapest thing on the whole car while spending too much on oil filters, remember it's your money. I also change my trans fluid every 25,000 with full synthetic Mobil 1 ATF and I actually change the spin on filter EACH time. I know, that's crazy! 239,000 on the original automatic, shifts like butter, fluid is cherry red and looks and smells new. The local shop said it was the most they had ever seen on a subaru automatic without a rebuild here which is in mountainous terrain and very hard on vehicles. I guess I could have saved a couple hundred on fluid over the years and paid $3000 for a new transmission instead.

Purolator Pure One is king and can often be found cheaper.. however as long as you change regularly an oil filter is an oil filter IMHO, just don't buy FRAM .

They don't have my filter model M1-110. Guess I'll pass.

Actually I bought two genuine Toyota oil filters from Toyota dealership for $5.41 each plus tax. Two filters including tax came to $11.66 (see the receipt scan).

pepboys recently had a mobil 1 synthetic and mobil one filter for 29.99 and i found 0w40 :\

$8 sale price is now gone for most types. Amazon's price is now $12.19 for my M1-108.

From the Compatibility Checker , my toyota 2002 corolla can use the M1-103 oil filter, when I check out, there are a alert "This product does not fit your 2002 Toyota Corolla"
