I would stick with prepaid cards, nothing with any permanent tie to you unless you don't mind paying a $5 cancellation fee.

For example, Discover "Secure Online Account #s" are assigned to a certain merchant, but they can still use that "one-time" card number to initiate credits or assign additional charges.

One of my friends used a Discover Secure Online Account # for some crap she saw on a TV Infomercial and they started charging her bi-weekly for more shipments of the item. Kind of defeats the purpose since I thought Discover Virtual Card #'s were supposed to only be used for 1 transaction.

They can try, but they are never getting paid. If you use a prepaid card with a set balance, how are they going to get their $5?

They should be happy you bought the book in the first place. Merchants get paid nothing for offering these coupons annually.

Sometimes they charge $1 above the amount and then it falls off.

I used a credit card with 03/13 expiry. Expecting a new card after that with different expiry and CVV so hopefully the cancellation charge would be declined.
