Only if certain party will allow it. We know certain party want smaller government, less spending/reduce deficit (don't want government spend money on programmers and software/customer support), and also think whatever government provide won't be as good as private company. As for State, there is a SD thread about free state e-file.

Yes, there is a difference. Click on your link and look at the prices for Deluxe, Premier, and Home & Business ($30, $50, and $75, respectively). Compare those prices to the prices in the title of this post.

The prices for Basic remains at $20 either way, and the Free edition stays, well, free.

So you carry your tax documents around with you, so you can do it online anywhere? You carry all your medical receipts, all your bank records, for preimier top benefit is rental (all your rental expense receipts, your documents for other deductions, parking receipts,), you carry all your w2's around for those who have multiple jobs, you carry all your stocks documents around? I guess you'd rather carry all these items around all the time, instead of just take one or half a day off and sit at a computer and finish it. But then again, if it only takes you one hour, it must mean you don't have much to do. So, online is probably better for you.

I tried the online version several years ago, but i think the problem i had with it was when i needed to amend my return a few years later, the old TT program was no longer available to me online. (I don't remember how many years were between.) So since then I have always bought the cd version, so i'd never have that issue.

Does anyone know for a fact whether this is still an issue? I'd prefer the cloud approach if i know for sure that i can always amend a return several years later....

Yes, but to compare apples to apples, you must add $19.99 to that price in order to E-File State (CD/Download only includes free Federal E-File). Brings the total up to $87.28 for comparison purposes. This IS a cheaper option if you don't include the 1,000 Southwest RR Points earned by using TT Online.

I am going to have to agree with the OP on this one. I prefer the online version to the CD version and here is why. No, I do not carry my tax documents around everywhere I go, but I also don't have to worry about backing up my TT files and possibly losing them. Using the online version also takes me about an hour to do all of my taxes and I have rental income, Interest income and employment income as well as 5 children. This includes all my deductions from my rental expenses and itemizing all my expenses.

While my taxes may not be the most difficult in the world, they are not extremely basic and being able to finish everything in about an hour with the online version is wonderful. I also don't have to deal with installing any software on my computer. I can also go back and see prior year tax info from any computer, which is useful when you need it. Some people prefer the CD version for various reasons, and I get that, but don't act like the OP is foolish for preferring the online version or anything.

Now, is it worth it (for both time and convenience) to spend $37 on the State File? I live in MD.

Do some searching for State Taxes on SlickDeals....I saw a thread a week ago that had deals for Free State filing, but it seemed VERY limited, and was highly dependent on what state you live in. If it turns out that TurboTax State is still what you need, then I personally would recommend the State E-File only because I think it's worth the cost for a quicker refund, and more importantly I like the tracking ability and instant confirmation that it was received (versus added cost of mailing it in, paying for certified mail, etc).

Also, thx for the info that BofA has increased their price (or decreased their discount..depending on how you look at it). I have updated the Main Post.

The link for BoA is now 39.99 for premier, just a 20% discount. The WF link shows premier at $34.99. Last year, BoA was offering 35% discount ( and the FAQs link on BoA website still mentions 35% off), and premier was $32.45. Wondering if BoA will go down to 32.45 too?

Can I get this or do I need both state and federal for NYC?

What does Federal Free = FREE include? Can you file 1040 with muti schedules or just 1040EZ?
