These things are a GODSEND for rising on these horrible, ugly, dark winter mornings. I can't recommend a light-alarm more highly,* especially if you can't stand being jarred awake by an audible alarm. I turn off the buzzer because waking up to a brightening room is far more pleasant.
I have the Sharper Image version (this one [amazon.com], rebranded) that I picked up about 6 years ago for ~$30. While it isn't as bright as these -- it's actually a little pathetic -- it has a proprietary "lamp module" that allows you to sync up a regular lamp, up to 300W. (Even with these Philip units, some of the reviews say "it's too dim," but I can't determine whether you can purchase an optional lamp accessory for them.) I took mine a step further and use a dimmable 300W CFL, rather than an incandescent bulb; it ramps up to a 12,000 lumen output at 5000K. That's really like sunrise ![]() The poor man's version -- a simple $5 light timer -- works okay. However, the gradual brightening of the alarm avoids the "Oh dear god, why is it suddenly so bright, I can't open my eyes!" phenomenon. Your choice. *I'm odd though and seem to have very a strongly light-influenced circadian rhythm. Once it is light out, I can't sleep. At all. Ever. Even if I am falling-over please-kill-me-now tired. I never napped as a kid either. On the other hand, I've never had jet-lag; even crossing 8 time zones, I adjust after one sunrise. Last edited by Venner; 01-06-2013 at 03:51 PM.. |

1. timer pluged in wall with extension cord going to 150 watt spot light aimed at my eyes and suspended from a screw in the ceiling directly above the bed that comes on same time as
2. Alarm clock 3. entertainment center playing radio / music / full blast also connected to timer. I still slept through a class in college twice.... Neighbors must of thought I was dead..: ![]() (this slow light would have done zero to wake this log zzzzz) |

I use an alarm clock and 2 cell phones, all scattered around my room. I still sleep through them, and sometimes sleepwalk and turn them off. Sometimes I even wake up hours after my alarms were set to go off and find that the light is already on as well, so I really don't think this would help me at all.
I work different hours day to day, some days I have to get up at 2:00a sometimes 6:00a and anywhere in between. Does anyone know of some valid products to help me wake up? |

I just bought this 2 weeks ago when it was $70. Obviously this is not an alarm to use if you have an important appointment to wake up to, definitely use a back up alarm. I wake up just fine with this alarm clock but there is a minor problem. Say you set this up for 6:30am. The light will gradually increase starting from 6 o'clock. That means there is a chance you will be woken up before 6:30. Happens to me every time, where i wake up at 6:15ish, before the birds even start chirping. Not a big deal, but just thought i bring that up. You do wake up more peacefully with this, without the jumpy feeling of an obnoxious alarm.
Also, not a bad lamp |

sleep hygiene is your problem. I work different hours as well so my sleep hygiene is my problem as well. if you cannot get up/go to sleep the same time every day, it will be tough to get anywhere. as for products, get a roomate. they will not let you hit snooze after a few days
