The price in October for the Hf3470 was $69.99, so while this is still a better deal than "normal", the "normal" has been lower in the past.

I've had one of these in my saved items for quite a while. I have a ghetto version of it rigged up with my lamp and some computer-controlled X10 stuff. Unfortunately, the X10 will only turn the lamp on at full brightness. This means I have to turn it on, then dim it down a bunch quickly, then slowly brighten it over time. Sometimes the initial turn-on wakes me up, defeating the purpose, but it was nice when it worked as intended. As others have said, it's more like a gradual sunrise wakeup and less of a shock.

It'd be nice to have a simple appliance that just does this properly, but I'm not sure it's worth $60 to me (since I've got almost the same thing for essentially free already).

Hmmmm, I'm looking into this. They're currently an Apple exclusive apparently, so they're heavily marked up elsewhere. $60 for a single bulb and $200 for the starter kit with 3 bulbs and the control bridge. http://store.apple.com/us/search?find=hue Sure seems more advanced than my old fashioned X10 stuff (which needs a running computer with DB9 serial port), but again, I don't have to pay for the stuff I already have.

I have one of these got it last year on clearance at target for like $50....it really does work...you wake up feeling more ready to go its kinda weird but I love mine...try it!

What I need is the iPhone dock that has the wheels on it. I use my phone alarm, my dock alarm, and an actual alarm clock alarm.
But the wheeled-dock seems good: Alarm goes off, dock starts driving around, and I would have to actually get up and chase it to turn it off. Imagine it rolling under a desk or something. By the time you shut it off, you are more than likely awake enough.

is there a software program for PC that can emulate this with your monitor? I have a pretty darn bright monitor and think it would do the job without having to pay $60 bones... Thanks.

Cable box can be set to wake-up/turn on. In the dark of winter, the tv going on (low volume) is usually enough to get me up. Normal alarms used as a fail safe.
