Which means you can stick it into a laptop or a NAS that supports 2.5" (laptop) drives.

If you remove the plastic exterior, the circuit boards will immediately be exposed. These are usually built into the inclosure of internal hard drives ( i believe)

He can take it apart and use just the drive as an internal if he wants.

which means it's not bound to be acting as a external HDD forever. You can take it out and use in a computer/ps3, anything that takes a standard 2.5" sata drive. WD solders the USB 3.0 module directly to the board so you can only use as a external hdd

Yeah, for now.

Unfortunately, since WD now owns Hitachi (HGST), it's only a matter of time before they switch over their portable HD series to the soldered crap.

If I buy an external portable... I want the flexibility to use the hard drive how I want (whether in my laptop or on the go). I don't want it to be soldered so I can ONLY use it as a portable.

Yeah... that's not what it meant at all. Stick Out Tongue Thanks for guessing though. The WD has a soldered connection, that means it's difficult at best to use it for anything other than a USB drive. This one has a standard SATA connection (someone said it's a Hitachi), which means you can pop it out and use it like any other 2.5" SATA, like inside a laptop.

I sent in a price match to amazon, hopefully we can get enough people to trigger a price drop.
