I have an old laptop brick. 18.5v, 3.5a. Would this be a bad idea to use, or might it work?

My i3 2120, with 2x4gb ddr3 1.5V 1333, and 64gb M4 ssd with foxconn h61 board uses 31 watt on idle o_o.

My numbers loaded the primary system as high as it can. I did not run SSD tests at the same time, which would add another 2W or so. |

I've been using a PicoPSU-90 (at least that is what my email says, I see that doesn't exist on minibox's site) + 60W AC power on a Intel Core 2 Duo E5300 system for over 3 years now as a HTPC solution and it has been working fine.
Looks like I paid $84 (after bing cashback) for the PicoPSU + 60W + M350 case. Last edited by wighty; 01-06-2013 at 08:47 PM.. |

What about for motherboards without the P4 connector but need the full 24 pin power supply connector? I've got a Foxconn ITX motherboard that I tried to power up with a picoPSU-80 but it wouldn't work.

What is 80+ Titanium? =P
No doubt these can be efficient, but it strictly depends on the kind of PSU brick you couple it with. I'd doubt the linked generic one is all that efficient. It's also only 6A so you're looking at less than 80W peak. Still plenty for an entry level core i3, let alone anything slower. As long as there isn't a graphics card involved or more than a couple drives. |

edit: i found a seller selling the PicoPSU 160w with a 190w barrel type, or I can pay an extra $2 for a 4-pin DIN. what would you recommend? Last edited by AkumaX; 01-06-2013 at 11:05 PM.. |

Your Foxconn motherboard, it doesn't have a P4 connector on it? Are you sure? I just looked up @ foxconn's website and the only mini itx boards without P4 I saw were the 45CSX and 45CS (embedded ATOM chips). Anyways if for whatever reason your foxconn board is just a stickler and *has* to have the pins filled then they do make a 20 to 24 pin adapter. It won't provide any extra power but if that is a weird bird of a motherboard then it may work for you. |

1.) Namely, that I had it sitting in my spare parts bin so it was free. 2.) Almost all of the 190w models have a fan that kicks on under load. There was one that didn't, but again since I had a power brick that would work with little effort I went that route. As far as the DA2 mod goes. It's pretty easy *if* you know how to solder. |

PicoPSU-80 Specs
@wighty picoPSU-90 exists and is here. [mini-box.com] ![]() · The picoPSU-90 includes the 4-pin P4 connector. · The power specs for the 80 are almost identical to the 90 (I pulled the picoPSU-80 values in the table below from the picoPSU-90 manual by mistake and only had to change the value in the note about combined max power output from 90 to 95W to make everything agree with the 80W manual) · The picoPSU-80 is a more recent design and is a hair more efficient. --------------- PicoPSU-80 specs are in the manual. Input Requirements: ·12V regulated, min=1A, max=10A (load dependent). ·Over-voltage shutdown will occur at ~13-13.5V. Efficiency Comparison: picoPSU vs. Past Efficiency Champs
The PicoPSU-80 should be slightly more efficient at the low loads, but most likely not at a Titanium level. The key thing to notice, however, is that even 80+ PSUs will have lower efficiency ratings at very low wattage. If your system is running at between 20-30W, the big PSUs will not be at peak. |
