If PMS does NOT do any transcoding, then HDD is irrelevant. However, if PMS DOES DO transcoding, streams are stored locally and SSD is a big advantage. I'm building a machine purely for video encoding. You think a SSD really makes a diffs, or is the FPS rate in Handbrake capped by the CPU anyway? I think the 3770k can do 100-130fps for 720p. I dont know what that means in mb/s on the write side? Can anyone tell me if a 5200 rpm 2TB would be a better idea? I have a NAS with 3TB drives so am not worried about storage space. Just trying to bring down encoding times. TIA.

Even now it runs one stream smoothly, with 2 it is having difficulties. I hope SSD will resolve it. Your 3770k is capable of running 1080p easily, not just 720p. Everybody's situation is different. I do not want to have desktop machine 24/7, trying to save some energy. You are in a different boat, though. |

isnt $90 expensive for 120gb 840? 840 250 gb was $150, and pretty common nowadays...

I have no need for 250gb and don't want to spend extra $60 (w/possible tax on top of this), so $90 for 120gb was right fit for me. Your needs might be different. |

The second link is to the Samsung "840 Pro" a high performance drive meant to be competitive with any SSD. Samsung 840 Pro uses a new Samsung controller and a new NAND stepping with Toggle-Mode 2.0 8-bit wide interface ---> 400MB/s per interface. 840 - new, new TLC flash, "value" drive. 840P - new 21mm Toggle-mode flash, "performance" drive. The "$250" 840P perfomance drive will be on sale again.
