I paid about 1100 for my front load washer/dryer. I never noticed the clothes being less clean or more clean what I did notice though is the clothes being less wet afterwards. This is a big deal because I can hang it and it will dry much faster. The only thing I use my dryer for is sheets. Not sure on combos though I suspect they are more expensive.

Someone mentioned cloths last longer. Which is just another justification. Cloths are cheap and people replace them all the time for reasons not associated with being worn out. That's just a marketing selling point that people buy in to. |

Op, If you want a washer that's going to use more water and tear up your clothes, then go ahead and get an old school washer. If you want a new HE washer and dryer set then I would recommend reading reviews and buying a good set. They can be had for around 500-600$ each. Getting the Best buy CC for free money is a no brainer, note that home depot usually has similar offers as well, as well as lowes. That being said we bought our set about 3 years ago and have had 0 problems with it. We always leave the washer door open and never have any mold issue. Target sucks -

Please stop using that tired excuse that a washer will shred cloths to death. That's not true. I've never had a HE is my over 40 years and until the last few years none of my friends either. Nobody is/has wearing weathered, battered cloths from a washer. Your happy about spending 1k on washer/dryer then fine. You don't need to justify it to any one. Also, if you need to finance a set and still have to leave the door open (which I don't in my old school one) to stop mold then maybe, just maybe these units are overhyped. |

Now comparing your 1980's model against a new HE washer when cleaning soiled, messy, grungy clothes . . . I dunno . . . maybe we can get Donald Trump involved and a 5mil bet on the line to get some answers. But I dunno how you can argue that agitators don't damage fabric, the simple laws of physics would seem to obviously prove you wrong. I don't think anyone is claiming they "shred" clothes to death, but it would seem that over extended amounts of time an agitator is causing excessive wear and tear to fabric. |

Last year 2012, I thought about going "green", especially when my 13 year old top loader was going out. I figure I can save money by using less water and less detergents. I wanted to switch out my top loader for one of those brand new fancy front loaders.
I found a website that does calculations on when I can even break even by buying an expensive front loader vs a cheap top loader vs keeping what I have. For me, it just wasn't worth it. It would just take too long to recoup that price difference. In the end, I settled for a $4 repair and kept my old top loader. First repaired in twelve years. The agitator dogs had to be replaced. My brother's $1400 LG front loader washer broke down in 1.5 years and cost almost $200 for repairs. I'm a true believer that appliances aren't built to last like they use to. 95% of my clothes are older than 10 years old so I don't know how people came up with the rumor that top loading agitator washers damages clothes. In the end, it's your money. Spend it the way you see fit. Last edited by calnbs; 01-09-2013 at 09:22 PM.. |
