As a recent graduate, I'll tell you it's definitely worth it.
Drive a car? Cheap gas.
Drink bottled water? Cheap bottled water.
Party? CHEAPPPPPP alcohol.
Lazy college student? Uhhh rotisserie chicken + tortillas are both dirt cheap. Grab some other canned things to spice it up.
Good cook? Cheap, high quality meats, seafood.
Also, their wholesale sized snacks are cheap. Nuts, candy, granola bars, great things for a "breakfast" when you're on the run and have an exam that day.
Their meat is good quality but its not cheap. You're getting what you pay for.
As far as respectable businesses, there is probably not a better retailer than Costco. My company sells their products to Costco and the level of food safety, ethical standards, etc they require of us is well above the industry standard. They also pay their bills timely and at reasonable prices. Costco's business model is completely different than other stores- they make money on the membership fees, so they don't need to charge outrageous prices on their merchandise, in fact they have a set mark up at15%. As a consumer, I really respect them for not trying to price gouge, paying their employees well, etc.
My favorite Costco items: IQF chicken breast, Oatnut bread, olive oil, spices, cottage cheese, milk, beer, cheese, cat and dog food, coffee, diapers, wipes, Carter's sleepers, batteries...I could go on and on...they have excellent meat, although you can find better deals other places.
Thanks for the reply. I am single and the nearest costco is about 20 min drive from my place. I guess I wont take it for the time being.
If you live near a costco so it's easy to go often, they are absolutely worth the money. We get the executive membership which costs you $110 per year, but you get a 2% reward back. It more than pays for itself, but then again there are 3 costcos near us and we have a family of 4. We find that the meat is by far better quality than the grocery stores....for that alone it would be worth it for us. My parents on the other hand live about an hour and a half away from their costco, so they don't go as often and it seems that it's not all that valuable to them...they therefor have my brother pick up stuff there for them and pay him back.
What documents needed to bring to sign up for new Costco membership? (just moved, no new bills yet) If don't sign up for AE cc, do you earn cash back on gold membership? Can you pay w/ master or Visa card w/ online orders provided that you have membership?
I've always wondered whether a Costco membership is worth it for a single, young grad student. Thoughts?
Not much, Most of the items are sold in 'wholesale' as big packages ,even the fruits and veggies comes in a big package. You could walk around and see for yourself .
Oh ..and if you have a friend who has membership you could ask them to get you costco gift cards which could later be used by non-members in costco.
A lot of Costco's don't require a membership to buy alcohol. Costco has amazing prices on alcohol, especially their Kirkland Brand.
the one in Brooklyn has high prices for alcohol. lots of discount stores have it cheaper.
maybe they have it better in NJ, but the ones that sell it are pretty far, plus over $20 in tolls
I wish they'd open more stores around here, like BJs. I hate that in BJs when they have coupons it's always limit 1, but Costco - 5.
1. My mom and brother are costco members but I am not...my mom never goes alone and always goes with my brother anyways...Is there anyway for my mom to switch her card to my name so I don't have to buy my own membership?
I don't know know what level membership they have aside that I know their costco card is black and they have the costco branded amercian express too.
I just want to use it to buy cheap lunches (1.50 hotdogs and 10 pizza) but they don't always let me in to go to the food court without a card.
The problem with Costco is the savings on the stuff you really want is not always worth the extra stuff you end up buying because its there, looks cheap and is in bulk. I don't shop there often enough, the few times I need to I beg a friend to take me.
