based on what you are saying they have a "high defect rate" ? if it's solely based on your experience, then that means nothing.
I've had a hero, 2 evo 3ds (sold one then a year later got another one), rezound, and now a one vx...they are all working fine. not bug free, but not defective by any means
maybe I should say "high failure rate from my own experience"
have have personallyed owned and used: HTC Mogul, HTC touch pro, Touch Pro 2, Evo3D
prior to that I have Windows MObile PDA, T-mobile sidekick, palm Treo phones. and they lasted closed to 2 years with no problems at all before I sold it off. and I also have black berry 8xxx and now a 9930 and they are all problem free. (or at least nothing major that I can think off or enough to make the device unusable). and I've owned pDA and HPC back from late 90s to early 2000s before it was consider "cool" (palms, "PocketPC", HandheldPC from the likes of compaq, philips, NEC). all those device I owned for alittle more than a year and they never gave me any issues (asside from a 2 missing lines on the LCD on a philips velo 500). I usually sell them after a year or so to upgrade to new device.
maybe it's my bad luck. but here's the issues I can recall with HTC devices: HTC Mogul - a few of the buttons on the keyboard stop working or require hard pressing to get letter to register so when u type u sense the tactile of the button press but the letter don't get registered to the device.
HTC Touch Pro - same thing happening with the physical keyboard as the Mogul.
HTC TouchPro2 - gps stop working for some reason and the OS became unstable. and crash or require a reboot at least once or twice a day. mind u I was using the same installed software and changed nothing since it started happening. tried a hard reset also but no fix.
HTC EVO 3D - the battery wouldn't charge properly, and won't hold such a good charge. The touch screen went bad where it would randomly get "phantom screen taps" (I leave a drawing app on and after some time it would draw a line by itself. and when I tap in one location two taps register (I use multi touch test app). once again hardreset does nothing to fix it. I end up paying about $25 and 3 hours of my time to research issue and dissemble instructions and ordering part from ebay to fix it. (touch screen glass, screen tape, new screen protector, new battery)
maybe it's my luck.. but I'm personally staying away from HTC.
Asside from that. the company that handles the extended warranty..
I order a Asus Transformer tf101 from cowboom and got the extended warranty. and when I got the unit. and looking at the paper work I was reading the material on the warranty and it seems to be arsed and I did a customer review and rating on the company and like I said before it was horrible.
(the Tablet worked fine until I eventually sold it to get a TF700 infinity. as the way of SD. so I have no first hand expeience dealing with the warranty provider)
I'm just letting people know what my experience was and the risk involved.

My days as a sales person @ bestbuy
Customer: This stupid phone I bought last week won't work right
Me: So it's the phone thats stupid and not you right?
Customer: I'm looking for an easy way to access my media files with my laptop when I'm in the yard.
Me: Sports Authority is having a sale on walking shoes.
Do any of the custom roms fix the LTE issue because this is the best deal I can find on a 4g LTE phone off contract for Sprint right now.
I have this phone and MeanBeanROM on it. Still pretty new since JB just came out about a month ago. I have issues where the alarm clock doesn't work everyday. Also the icons on the 5 main pages sometimes disappear and take 30 seconds to reappear.
I was using MeanICS before this which was more reliable.
I would say that MeanBean has improved the reception of LTE a bit but not that much. My wife has iPhone 5 and she gets LTE in more places than me and when she does the speeds are much higher.
I am barely able to hit about 6Mbps with LTE. iPhone 5 15-16 Mbps. My sister's GS3 much better also.
