Okay, I bought this as a perfectly cheap treadmill desk.

I was looking at the $40 SurfShelf [amazon.com] treadmill desk since I was impressed by the video [youtube.com]. Still I wasn't willing to spend $40 for something with limited space and can risk vibrating my electronics to death.

My question is, what is the width of the vertical metal support? Our treadmill is 26" across so I'm guessing this 34"W shelf will do?

Also, for anyone interested, Walmart dropped their prices a bit on the Ameriwood bookshelves [walmart.com]. I got the 5-Shelf Bookcase for $31 free ship to store. It's normally $35 so not much of a deal, but this is still a bit cheaper than last year's prices.

I have this gorilla shelve larger than this one I guess I got it from home depot some 3-4 years back still going strong.
I agree sometime the boards are just engineered wood saw which comes off easily.
If I paint them with stain will it work? what kind of paint I should use, I thought of this idea but never materialize, I guess I would get something in gray color to match with frame.
mine were just 3/8" particle board which is absolutely terrible around moisture. It swells and gets brittle when wet. My color is an ugly ochre color that I picked up somewhere as a mis-mixed gallon at Lowes or HD for $5. The shelves are covered with junk so color isn't an issue.

Your main goal is to get good coverage and keep water from soaking in so any paint will be better than no paint. Stain won't do much to help unless it's a one-step kind of product with a sealer in it. Your best bet is a paint made for waterproofing, but mine is just a basic latex. Gave it two quick coats and seems to have done the job...been couple of years now and no noticeable problems. Look around and see what you already have. If you have leftover deck sealer or polyurethane from another project then they might work, too.
