I bought one specifically to use as a work bench. I was going to build one myself originally but this is a decent price, and it looks like you can make maybe 2 work benches even. Doesn't look like there's a backboard though

I have both this one (4 of them) and the costco one. They each have their purposes.

Ace - 32-35$ each, Would not use for work bench, great for shoes, small boxes, toys, books

Costco - 65-125$, would use for work bench, would place heavy tools, canned foods, lots of weight (About the same height and width. Costco twice the depth)

Buy whatever fits your garage.

According to the instructions the workbench will setup like set 8 in the pdf link. I ordered three and plan on putting two tall shelves on either side of the workbench. I also measured my current workbench and it's also 36" tall which these should be when assembled as pictured.

If anyone as a different setup I would love to see it...

Thanks for the link. That is pretty much what I was expecting. I've never seen a 5 shelf unit turn into an actual work bench. They usually show the unit assembled in 2 separate pieces - 1 3-shelf unit and another 2 shelf unit with no bottom shelf. Having no bottom shelf can be convenient for storing wheeled items that you don't always need out in the open like an air compressor, shop-vac, or floor jacks.

I bought 4 last time and they are perfect for my garage. Once assembled it is very sturdy and the depth is perfect because it doesn't occupy too much space.

I bought 3 of these a while ago for $30 the metal is flimsy but once assembled they are surprisingly sturdy. The shelves are also supported on all 4 sides which helps a lot. You will definitely need a rubber mallet to put them together and I assembled them myself but having an extra set of hands to hold things in place would have saved me a lot of time.

Good price but i got these for 26.99 2 years ago from Ace.

Great shelves too but you may have to buy a sheet of decent plywood. The Particle board is average at best.

How do these compare to the the HDX shelves from HD [homedepot.com]?
I have the black HDX shelves, but not the Gorilla. They are not going to hold the weight that the Gorilla rack will hold, but they are still surprisingly good. Keep in mind that the HDX shelves are shorter... but you are not limited to the height shown in the pic if you have more shelves. So you can, say, buy 4 shelving units at $20/ea and make 3 72" tall units for about $27 ea. Or you can move up a notch in the HDX range and get the ones that are a cream color with the black plastic ends for $35/ea which are already 72" without any mixing and matching (I have these shelves, too).

Both the HDX shelves are 36" wide and 18" deep, which means that they have more spacious shelves (and a larger footprint) than these Gorillas. And FYI the weight rating for the black HDX is 125/shelf and the cream one is 150/shelf. If you don't need the higher weight rating of the Gorillas (or similar) you'd probably be very happy with the HDX ones. And as a bonus the fully-assembled HDX shelves are easily moved by one person once assembled, even from room to room if you like.

Ship to store is free. Make sure you have the right shipping option selected.

Eh, I live in Alaska. Companies try to charge up the butt for shipping every chance they get. I once had to replace a small part (weighed about 4 ounces) for a vacuum I bought at sears. The part was 6.95 and they wanted to charge 24 dollars shipping and even the manager wouldn't waive a single cent off.

Make sure to buy a rubber mallet or else you'll either damage the shelves or go through what this lady did. This thing is pretty easy to put together with two people.

Agreed, rubber mallet is key to assembling these shelves. I have four of the Lowes Edsal shelves, first was a nightmare to put together. Then started using a rubber mallet and the assembly flew for the rest.

Might I suggest just going to your local Ace Hardware and buying it right off the shelf. This is a Red Hot Buy for the month and should be fully stocked. You would have to go there to pick it up anyway if you ordered it online. As for the $5 off $25 coupon - that is good on regular priced merchandise only. While you are there (and if you are an Ace Rewards Member) be sure to pick up the Peak windsheild washer fluid for $.99. As of January 1st, Ace Reward members will now receive instant savings at the register, no more mail in rebates.

In my garage I currently have 4 of these gorilla racks, the Edsal units from Lowes that are $50.00ish on sale, and the $60.00 heavy duty unit from Costco.

I will never buy anything besides the Heavy Duty unit from Costco;. It's currently holding a crazy amount of weight and it’s solid as a rock.

The Lowes are the second best units

and these are by far the worst in quality. They are pretty flexy and as other state the wood that comes with them is pretty thin.

That being said if you just need some racks to hold some not so heavy things, these will work fine just be aware they are not very deep at all.
costco ones are 65 now i think
