Chicago - Berlin, Germany $690 RT w Taxes

Airberlin starts service from Chicago in March. They start with 3 flights/week, then more in May. Looks like this fare is available on days they fly from March-May. I believe the 3 days are Thursday, Saturday, Monday.

This isn't as cheap as what Turkish does to Istanbul, but considering Lufthansa and United can easily be $1k+ for this, I think this is a pretty good price, especially since this goes through May. AB is a Oneworld partner so you can get miles on American, etc.

Even the inaugural flight on 3/23 has this fare (usually an inaugural flight gives a little "gift"/celebration).

It seems taxes in Germany are a lot less. I saved over $200 in just taxes one-way to Scandinavia by booking an Airberlin flight from Miami to Copenhagen via Frankfurt as opposed to the "normal" route via London with BA. Paid $15 tax.

I think that BA includes the fuel surcharge as part of taxes and fees, rather than part of the fare, like all other airlines. So you didn't save much, if anything specifically in taxes, you just booked a cheaper flight overall.

Germany imposes a departure tax on all flights leaving the country, and it's higher if your destination is outside Europe. It can actually work out the same to fly from Germany to Spain or Italy on one of the budget European airlines and then fly on to the US.

As far as I'm concerned, Air Berlin's offer is a great deal in that it's currently the cheapest ticket to Berlin and it's a direct flight (the first time a direct flight from Chicago to Berlin is available). The price is an improvement over the past couple years, where it's been impossible to find a ticket to Berlin for less than $900, if not $1000.

There's an option during checkout to enter your membership #. You have to do that even for AB. You'd just select AA or BA from the list.
