Chicago - Berlin, Germany $690 RT w Taxes

I'll mention they charge $19 for a seat reservation. I don't know how that compares to other carriers. You can pick your seats on online check in before the flight for free.

I am trying to book a flight from Chicago to Berlin on May 30.
The price for this ticket with the return date of June 24 is $690.00.
If you change the return date to July 8, the price goes up significantly.
I am planning on returning in July but I cannot pay $1,500.00 for the return date in July.
Here is what I discovered, though:
I found a flight with Air Berlin to Copenhagen with a stop over in Berlin with the return date on July 10 for about $830.00. The flight from Chicago to Berlin is the exact same flight number as the flight from Chicago to Copenhagen with the stop over in Berlin.
I am thinking of just buying the cheaper ticket and NOT taking the plane from Berlin to Copenhagen, and then I would like to do the same on the way back.
It should not be a problem going from Chicago to Berlin but I am afraid that they will cancel my ticket on the way back since I will NOT show up at the airport in Copenhagen.
Has anyone done this? Does the Airline care if I don’t show up on one of the connecting flights?

Germany can be crazy cheap. Far cheaper than the US. Even cheaper than "third world" destinations like Argentina. The key is, you have to hit it at the right time. There's a lot of flux. For example, the place I stay in Frankfurt, fluxes between $30 and $300. When there's a convention in town, it's $300. When there's not, it's $30. The same baby suite would cost me $300/night, every night, in NYC or SF. Considering that Germany is a first world economic powerhouse, that's remarkable.

Here's a money saving tip. Buy a Bahn Card. The short term trial card will save you 25% on all train rides. If you book far enough in advance you can get some crazy cheap prices. I've gone FRA-CGN for 19 euros roundtrip. That's before the 25% off with the bahn card. Even taking one trip can pay for the bahn card.

FYI: Looks like United and Lufthansa are even beating these prices based on an Expedia search I just did.
