I've got everything in PDF files now. No clutter and I can keep the documents indefinitely.
Oh and since this is SD, I'll mention that I got my HP Officejet pro 8600 Plus for $99 at Office Max after trading in an old inkjet that was sitting in the garage. I have degrees in both animal behaviorism and psychology and have come to the conclusion that animals make a hell of a lot more sense than people.

Not too long ago, my accountant was telling me that he just had an IRS agent who questioned the authenticity of every document he was given . . . and they weren't copies or scans, they were the original documents. He highly recommends to me that I keep originals even if for nothing else but to cut down on the potential hassle factor with the IRS. Not to mention is saves us plenty of time with regards to scanning in all our paperwork. Use wisely your power of choice.

The IRS will accept digital copies of documents, we just had an audit for the 2010 tax year using both types of documents for reference. Some of the documents had to be verified, but that was nothing more than having the issuer of the documents sign letters we drafted verifying the validity of the documents.
