So after some long talk, I decided to go with AT&T. I'm on their max plan which is 12mbps because there's people in the house who like to watch streaming movies and tv channels like ESPN and I didn't know if the Elite 6mbps would be enough or not, so I settled for 12mbps, which is $29.99/month. The thing that I hate about it is that for some reason, my house is a very rare case in which they force me to use their proprietary modem and I can't buy my own to save on rental fee costs, which they charge $6/month for, so I'm stuck with that for a year. The second thing I hate about it so far is that their false advertising on the wireless range. The sales rep told me it can go as far as 500 feet, then the technician who installed the modem said it would go 250-350 feet, and then I went off with chatting with technical support today and they said the modem can go 40 feet. I'm like 40-50 feet from the access point in the house and I get two bars signal and the speed tests fluctuate between 5mbps-10mbps very often, and it's very annoying when you're sitting in the same place and it's changing on it's own. Too bad they had to force a 12 month contract rather than going month to month for 12 months without ETF. I couldn't talk to them to get me that. I'd rather use this service for 6 months and then jump back to Comcast when they finally have a $19.99/month for 12 months performance promotion again. With performance, I was getting 21mbps and now so far, with downloading at 12mbps, there's not that much of a difference, but I have a feeling if I start streaming and watching a lot of things on tv from my computer, depending on how many people are doing that and downloading at the same time, it will make a difference. |

Wow, AT&T lets you rent off their modem. They forced me and other customers to buy off like $75 or $100. The crappy Motorola modem acts as a router as well. It will die maybe within one year or so. Within 1.5 year, I already have four modems replaced/exchanged. |

Yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to be complaining to them more often. I already have these past couple of weeks. It took them 9 days to come out and install the service. In regards to the modem, yes, I'm forced to rent a modem. I have cousins who live within a mile from me who had a modem given by AT&T to self install and they don't pay anything monthly. They actually had a FAR modem for new customers, but I didn't qualify because my household is a "rarity" and so, I'm forced to pay $6 a month just to have the low quality modem in my house. I've seen deals here on SD for comcast modems to be bought for around $60-70 as a one time deal so that you don't have to pay for the $7/month rental fee. |
