I would not make a measly 240GB harddrive into an external drive. If you want to speed up your start up/ shut down and how quickly applications launch, then get an SSD and install it as the internal drive. Take the 500GB that comes out and use it as an external drive for storage of photos, music, etc. Otherwise, get a bigger drive for an external if you want to go that route.

It's plug and play. What will you need to backup? You ideally would be replacing the internal drive with this one, so you can then just hook up your old internal drive as a slave or external to recover all your needed data. I would also suggest a clean install of the OS on this drive as opposed to attempts at ghosting or imaging.

Install it UNDER the optical drive. Leave in the HDD and Optical drive. There is plenty of room to do this (be sure to route the cables correctly). At least, that is what I did.

Lately I've been working with a database in the GB's, I've been create a ramdisk from my 8GB of ram and it clearly smokes any SSD on the market ten fold.

However, the database has got so big that I need more than 6 GB. So I got one of these. Overall snappier PC is upside as well, with much needed read/write when I need it. The only issue is that I normally need 1 TB for my C:\ - a 256 GB drive will let me be more mindful what I really need on my PC (or ill just offload it to my 2 TB external)

Benchmarks of this SSD are good, seems to outperform OCZ Vertex 4 which was labeled as a tier 1 drive by tomshardware.

This just beats the higher-end Vertex 4 using ATTO benchmark. But once you start doing in-compressible data or other possible worst case scenario; like what CystalDiskMark, or AS SSD does, or even comparing by actual IOP, this drive perform like most SandForce controllers does--just good enough.

SanDisk just released their new Ultra series, so the Extreme will be dropping in price--as seen here. A lot of manufactures are switching to a more reliable controller other than SandForce, but again, there isn't much too wrong with SandForce controllers (at least their latest generations ones).

thanks for the info. I just talked to engineer I work with (I work at a TV station) and he said sandisk ssd arent that great for MACs internally anyway. He recommended OWC ssds for internal. I may try and cancel order and hold out for a good deal on a 500gb OWC.

Fanboy alert. You can see in the scatterplot (that you provided) that the force 3 has one of the top price/performance ratios out of all the drives you mentioned.

i agree. i thought 50 cents/gig is a standard price for SSD now a day (with old tech). if this price is for Intel SSD, then it's a good deal.
