can't speak for the red drives specifically, but when I bought bare WD black drvies from them a few months ago, they came packaged very nicely, secured in cardboard cutouts and filled with peanuts

I think it varies by shipment. I have bought single drives that were loose in a box and slid all around. And I bought 4 drives at once that came in a factory styrofoam tray. Basically, I think it is YMMV.

hm...is that the reason why Newegg's WD Red has such horrible rating while Amazon has excellent rating?

if thats the case, i am wondering if i should cancel my amazon order and take a chance with newegg.

I had HORRIBLE luck with WD Reds from Amazon. Ordered 3, 2 were DOA. Terrible packaging. Both DOA's were replaced (once again with terrible packaging, and 1 of them was DOA again.

I ordered three of these from Amazon before Christmas and they all arrived safely.

This drive is pretty commonly $150 so this is $10 off regular price. It's a good deal if you need it soon, otherwise you might want to wait for a better price.

Keep in mind this is just a WD green drive with different firmware. If you're not planning to use it in a RAID just go with the green (assuming it's cheaper (and it should be usually)).

Shame ZipZoomFly went under :/ I bought a samsung drive from them in 2008, and toshiba hdd for my ps3 in 2009, and loved the way they handled/packaged hdds... Shame they went so downhill soon after

Bought from them back in the early 2000s when they were googlegear and were advertised in computershopper all the time lol.

Anyways, shame that companies can't seem to ship properly these days. 3/4 of my last Amazon orders have been so banged up, but luckily only one order was truly destroyed beyond use (books bent and soaked)

that is weird... i ordered 5 from Amazon and they were all packaged very nicely. and no DOA luckily.

i got the 1812+ and already 5 of these. just need 3 more cuz i ran out of space. but was worry about ordering from Newegg cuz of thehorrible packaging and the amount of DOA for this drive i was reading about. i guess i can take a chance if i am saving 60 bucks.
