PC backup/ home media server affordable options?
Any suggestions or links to affordable options to set up a PC based backup/home server drive that also makes files available wirelessly to IOS devices, PCs and a non-smart HDTV? I see then WD Plus Book(the 800 mhz CPU seems slow but software fairly good)and theSeagate GoFlex(crap software but found a $99 3 TB price is pretty slick) the PogoPro device, but could also take an old desktop maybe or my Dell i7 win 7 lappy and hook it to my wireless router and external drive. Maybe get a Roku XS to steam to my TV? I have these devices available: a Dell Inspiron SE Lappy w/ win 7 1 TB (5400) and i7 close to Uverse 2 Wire router and a Dell win 7 i5 AIO w/ 1 TB 7200 away from router, an iPad, 3 IPhones, a win 8 Nokia Lumia920 phone, a Xbox 360, and 2 other win 7 lappys, and a win 8 gaming rig hooked via Ethernet. Geez that's a lot of tech toys thanks to SD! My wireless router is a ATT Uverse 2Wire the home server drive or outer would hook to. Any help, links, or adobe receives Rep for sure! |

So the goal is to have backup and also to stream videos to various devices on the network? To be cheap, you'd want to buy as few new devices as possible.
Pick one of your existing Windows computers that is wired into your router to be your "media server". Use the Play To [xbox.com] feature of your Xbox to access. Maybe use other DLNA software to stream to your iOS devices. Add a high capacity HDD to the "media server" and share it across the network to hold backups of your computers.
