For photo editing on the go I'd recommend an HP mobile workstation with the Dreamcolor screen option ( High end IPS panel).

Lenovo ThinkPads are a continuation of IBM's business class machines. The current models aren't as special as the IBM ones but they are still better than most machines you'll find on the market.

There are a few models sold by other companies that are built tougher than current ThinkPads ( e.g. Panasonic ToughBook).

Something like this [hp.com] would be a good modern ThinkPad replacement for most of us though.

Basically ThinkPads are designed for heavy work and therefore built better than regular consumer class notebooks.

It's not much more weight than this 15.6" laptop at 6.15lbs though.. so if you were already considering a 6 lbs laptop, I don't think the screen size would be a limiting factor as your previous post suggested. I used to have a Dell D810 too.. those things were huge.. I believe they were also only 15", but the screens were really nice on them. If you're looking for something portable, I'd probably skip on a gaming laptop altogether as they usually don't go hand in hand.

I got the windows 7 500gb 7200 rpm (no ssd) model for $848 (after tax and shipping etc).. And after updating all the drivers.. I haven't seen any of the issues others have had.. especially regarding the pad. I guess everyone's mileage varies?.. I might've just lucked out.

I also received my laptop within 4 days after purchase online.. (shipped from Greensboro).. must've lucked out again lol..

The biggest issue and only issue I have so far is the Glossy screen. If Lenovo would've given us the option to choose a Matte screen.. this would've been a solid 10/10 buy for the price/specs. I'm in Florida.. and it's sunshine 400 days out of the year.. (80 degrees in Dec/Jan) Close to unbearable outdoors unless in a really shady area.

My small nitpick would be the brushed aluminum looking lid.. it feels really cheap.. and bends when slightly pressed... For a near $1000... you would think they would use a sturdier lid (maybe it would've pushed it far above it's proclaimed 5.9 lbs) But I think it would've been worth it.. And the Lenovo logo is just stickered on.

Other than that.. I am satisfied with this laptop. Way better than any other laptop I've seen for the price I got it for.

I have, I put my Intel 310 80GB SSD in my machine. The only trick is I did not go through the trouble of getting my drive formatted with GPT and whatnot to make it compatible with UEFI boot.

If you enable Legacy boot in the BIOS, you won't have a problem. You do lose a few things not using UEFI, but none of them are relevant to me ("quick boot"...my machine boots in less than 20s now, virtually unlimited partitions, larger than 2TB HDDs, and a few others).

16G SSD, simply too small.
