Elements is "portable", i.e., gets its power via USB cable. Mybook is powered by AC. Mybook comes packaged with automatic backup software. Which one is better? That depends on your usage. If you have a single desktop that you want constantly/automatically backed up, then the Mybook will do the job. If you prefer using your own software or need the hard drive to be portable, then Elements is the one for you. |

I prefer the smaller form factor of My passport series.
Do those ever go on sale? Leave Tiger's Wood alone.

I've been using several of these drives (of varying capacities) for 2 years now without any issues. (as opposed to Seagate drives, which I won't touch anymore).

I want internal HD's (preferably green) to come down to these prices. I just setup a media server and need to start filling it with HD's.

I'm a new mac user (yes, I've caved and finally ditched the windows PC). I have a 500gb iMac (no USB3.0) and wanted to get around to backing up using Time Machine. Any of these drives good for that? What's my best bet?

Never had a problem with rebates from any company as long as I've resent a photocopy when they claim it wasn't received. Anyways, in for 1!

USB 2.0 is slightly disappointing, but I imagine they're clearing out stock and that's one of the reasons for the price. I'm in for one. Thanks OP.
I used to despise Tiger Direct's rebates, but they have really improved recently. I'd prefer and outright price, but at least I no longer suspect they're looking for any excuse to refuse to honor their terms. I plan on using this solely as a document/photo/video backup hard drive and storing it somewhere other than my home, so transfer speeds aren't very important after the first enormous transfer. Maybe that will even be a good test of the drive's heartiness. Anyone with children, please do something similar. Take it to your parents' or a friend's home, or store it in a safety deposit box at your bank, but don't lose those pictures. |
