This is for USAA members only - full or partial members are fine. If you are not a USAA member you can sign up at USAA.com for free (With or without military affiliation - USAA membership is fantastic and well worth signing up either way!)

Explore Travel, USAA's travel booking partner is offering 40% off all hotel rooms booked thru 1/19 using coupon code "USAA1"

UPDATE 2: Now only valid on bookings >$750(Total, not per night) so to get 40% off your booking has to start >$750.

I found some great deals on there - rates were comparable to kayak in many cases - and then 40% off those rates!

http://www.explorecruisetravel.com/ - it will prompt you for USAA login - once you find your hotel, select room, the checkout page will have a place for the coupon about half way down.

Ontop of this, for travel, USAA also has great rates on rental cars - and free Avis Preferred/Hertz Gold membership with USAA membership - with under 25 year old renters free (save $27/day) and many discounts and coupons.

If you are signing up for a new USAA account and do not want to provider your SSN, call the 800 # on the USAA.com signup page and they will give you a membership ID that you can then use to sign up online. That said, they wont pull your credit if you provide your SSN unless you apply for credit/loan. <-- Thanks Thare187

Are they allowing non military people to sign up? I thought USAA was limited to military people. If so, this is great news
USAA has 2 kinds of accounts, partial and full. Partial accounts are non military and cannot get insurance and some banking/credit features. Anyone can sign up online for that account.

Full accounts are for any military affiliated people (parents/grandparents/kids/etc, they're pretty flexible.)

This has been available for a few years atleast

Yes, that means a passport or driver's license. That is standard language for every single hotel booking.

They are the USAA travel partner - USAA is a fantastic company who requires their partners stand behind what they sell (Most of their non-insurance and non-banking products are partnerships.)

I've had good luck dealing with explore in the past for both hotel and cruise travel - and this is an advertised special they sent out via email to all members of their mailing list - http://cl.ly/image/1z2Y232J0u1X

I would be shocked if they cancelled anything, especially as they've got to, by this point, be aware of the popularity of this deal and the coupon still works fine.

I agree about USAA being reputable as I have been a full member for the past 15 years but there is a disclaimer when you leave the USAA site that they are not responsible, blah, blah, blah, etc.

I am REALLY keeping my fingers crossed! Because if my reservation holds (sadly, it's not for five more months), this could end up being the deal of the century. I am going to wait a few days and call the hotel directly to see if my reservation in their system. I saw the Four Seasons Las Vegas for $100(!!!!) a night after the coupon.

We're going to D.C. for a week in May. Can anyone suggest a good area to book a hotel? We prefer walking and using the Met as opposed to driving ourselves everywhere so we'd need to be within walking distance (10 minutes?) of a Met line. TIA!

Their site is really goofy for me. I cannot load a lot of pages. I can't seem to search for anything without getting an error. Using IE9. Anyone else, or just me?

Four seasons

Regarding hotels in DC, book something near Dupont Circle. There is a hotel on new hampshire ave that's well reviewed.

I stayed at THEhotel and it was awesome. Mandalay Bay is so damn big I didn't even find the entrance to the Four Seasons.

The vacation points can be used towards cruises and full vacation reservations, nothing for just hotels which is the only thing this 40% off coupon works on.

That said, 5000 points are worth up to 300$/person off on a cruise - the last one i booked it was 100$ off/person for 5000 points - not bad though.

Four Seasons by one million miles. The rooms have been completely remodeled as of December 2012. The hotel is entirely smoke free. The service is amazing. It has been described many times as an oasis amidst the chaos of Vegas, and that's the perfect description for it. The only hotel better in Vegas is the Mandarin Oriental. The *only* reason I think it's better is because the MO is more centrally located.
