FYI - This laptop has the AMD E-300 processor with a PassMark rating of 632. The Intel Atom N570 has a PassMark rating of 614 (and the Atom D2700 is 855). So this is essentially a 15.6 inch Netbook - which is great for internet surfing, but will seem slow for a lot of other tasks.

Reads like they're trying to gut prices to get rid of overstock inventory. Only technology on this unit is Win8. I'm sure it's a deal for someone, perhaps very entry level, but I shan't touch it.

How weak a processor can I get away with for a laptop that will only be used for web surfing and watching videos (up 1080p to be on the safe side) and skype and some office productivity ? I can even add an older but quality ssd. Family member wants at least 15in and a number pad with the laptop .

Here is a quick product review for information...

Toshiba’s newly released sub-$300 notebook configuration is the Satellite C855D-S5100. Priced at $280, the 15.6-inch C855D-S5100 offers very basic computing power provided by the AMD E-300 processor. The CPU is from the lowest-end AMD Fusion line. Speaking of commonly used laptop processors, the E-300 is slower than almost all of them, but it is adequate for daily use such as web browsing, word processing, spreadsheet editing, and similar.

The 4GB RAM is OK for all tasks an average user might throw at the laptop, but the 320GB hard drive has the lowest capacity among today’s laptop HDDs.

The lists of drawbacks doesn’t end here, since the notebook doesn’t have HDMI and USB 3.0 technology. However, the $280 price tag is certainly among the lowest on the market, so if you don’t require a great speed and HDMI and want to save money, the C855D-S5100 is a good choice. There is no reason to choose, for example, the Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5340 with the slightly better AMD E1-1200 and much higher price of $400. But, for those wanting more computing muscle, Toshiba has a new model called the C855D-S5110 ($370) with the much faster A6-4400M and HDMI. If you don’t want to break the $300 mark for your new laptop but need HDMI, one of the options to consider is the HP 2000-2b30dx with the same specs + HDMI.

The AMD is a POS....slower than a core 2 duo

Get a intel pentium b940/950/960... Great value and fast for your needs. A good SD should be around $300 or less

I would think the e300 with its onboard GPU could watch a 1080p video.

I personally would not touch this unless it was under $200.
