One other negative about these Filtrete thermostats, and it’s a cosmetic one.

When installing one of my thermostats, I discovered the old one covered up a rather large electrical box. No way was this Filtrete going to completely cover up that box given the empty cavity on the side opposite the wifi unit. It just looked awful. IMO, Filtrete should provide some means to cover this up, either covers or dummy cartridges. I used some white vinyl tape, which looks ok, but could be better.

Again, not a deal breaker, but it does seem a bit sloppy and unpolished for Filtrete to simply have left the backside so open (for the non-wifi version, I’m sure it's even worse). Not everyone has nice, small, exit holes for their wiring.

I have a similar issue. Mine has a standard electrical junction box behind it which isn't covered by the thermostat. Plan on getting a standard light switch plate cover like this one to mount behind the thermostat and have the wires exit the hole:

Not ideal, but it solves the issue. The Filtrete is a little on the cheapy side with the build and small details like this and the wires on top just having a flimsy cover.

Workable solution I suppose, provided you have WHITE walls. I have SEAFOAM GREEN walls. Luckily I had a little paint left over, and had to touch up the area before I could even begin installation. And yeah, the wire cover is ridiculous, it’s just a sticker.

That's what I mean about unpolished. Filtrete cut some corners on this unit that just seem silly. It's as if they assumed everyone would have white walls, and only new, clean installations. I’d be pissed if I bought this full retail ($150), but for $70, you learn to make do.

Just wanted to add that these thermostats are still available at some HD's B&M on the shelf, but it's definitely YMMV in terms of availability, and the prices may also vary. In the Reston, VA Home Depot, the shelf was tagged $75 (clearance, yellow tag) but they only had one customer returned item. I had a friend out in Corvallis, OR check his local HD and he found two remaining new ones for $69, so I had him buy them for me. Looking forward to replacing my regular thermostats with these WiFi ones. Smilie

It almost seems like it was designed to be recessed into the wall inside a box of some sort, but it didn't look like it wit sit down in a standard junction box. It would look great if you could recess the whole rear part into the wall, but they just never made a kit or whatever to be able to do that.
