What mixed reviews on the Ryobi unit!
Home Depot averages 2 stars from 77 reviewers (New unit) Linky [homedepot.com]. Newegg averages 4 stars from 6 reviewers (Refurb). Linky [newegg.com] VM Innovations averages 4.5 stars from 13 reviewers (refurb) Linky [vminnovations.com] Sears has no reviews. Linky [sears.com] Between the two, I'd take the Poulan Pro. I've always heard that straight shaft trimmers last longer. Also, the Poulan Pro got better reviews, when looking at the average reviews when combining those of Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon, Newegg, etc. Last edited by Deal Explorer; 01-17-2013 at 01:49 PM.. I have the ryobi. Major POS!!! Must pull it 15+ times to start. Then the starter rope wears out and way too much stuff must be removed to replace the string. Literally you have to take the shaft out and unbolt the entire outer casing to get to the recoil. Major flaw in the design. I got so pissed off at the ryobi that i kept the attachments and threw the engine in the trash.

I have the Poulan. Cranks on on or two pulls every time. Good weed eater. If you buy the Poulan, make sure you get the edger attachment. Got mine from Amazon for 50ish. Great attachment!

I have two of the Poulans from these guys. They run great and start easily. Bought a refurb WeedEater blower from them for $45 FS. Great products from a great vendor!

This Ryobi is the same as the newer Homelite trimmers and I think they are trash and would highly recommend against those (they are owned by TTI a chinese company). They don't even have a proper air filter, just a screen that would hardly filter out actual dirt. Out of the two I would recommend the Poulan trimmer (owned by Husqvarna, a swedish company). I will say that no matter which you buy, try it out immediately and make sure that everything works well, they like to miss stuff on refurbs. Sometimes they just need a carburetor adjustment and that is only covered for I believe 30 days and after that it is not covered by the manufacturer and you would have to pay for it.
Just an fyi, they both have the starters in the front to save money. Doing so allows them to use only a half-crank. Full cranks in theory should have less vibration and last longer. |
