I heard AT&T doesn't cover water damage. Wonder if that's the same with Verizon's. I love ST warranties, many actual claim stories and hardly anyone complains who has filed a claim. Paying about $200 (insurance, and deductible) makes it worth insuring for ADH and no exclusions but software issues. Buying a replacement phone for mine would run me 400-600.

Wish this deal came up yesterday. Bought my ST via Amazon for 2 yrs for $99. Too much trouble to cancel and try to get this one for $15 savings.

I had to do a bit of reading and talk to a rep last summer when I was trying to buy an insurance policy, and I was price shopping between Apple Care and SquareTrade. I can clear this up for you.


When you purchase an insurance policy through SquareTrade, you are given the "unlocked price" of you phone as allotment. This means that most people will have $600 or so in insurance funds, and those who buy the 64GB iPhones will have more money allotted to their insurance policy. Every time you need to get your phone repaired or replaced, SquareTrade will cut you a check to cover the entire cost of your repair, and subtract that amount from your allotment.


If you ask SquareTrade to handle your repairs, they will send you a prepaid box. It is up to their discretion whether they send your phone to Apple for replacement, or send it to a third-party for repair. However, they will charge you a $50 deductible irregardless, and this acts as a handling/shipping fee. The costs for the actual repairs are subtracted from your allotment. So if they had to send your phone to Apple for a replacement that costs $250, they will subtract $250 from your $600 allotment, and then also charge you $50 in deductible. So you end up paying $50 out of pocket and you have $350 left in your insurance policy. If you have to get your phone replaced again at the $250 rate, another $250 will be subtracted from your policy, leaving you with $100 of policy. If you request to do it a third time, since there isn't enough money left in your policy, SquareTrade will cut you a check for $100 and tell you to do it yourself and your insurance policy is cancelled.


Now, if you decide to contact Apple and have them send you a pre-paid label, or if you go visit a physical retail store and have your phone fixed directly trough Apple (or any other third party repair shop), then you just need to send a scanned copy of your receipt to SquareTrade. SquareTrade will cut you a check for the amount you paid out-of-pocket for the repair, and then subtract that amount from your insurance policy. However, since they didn't handle your repairs directly, they will not charge a deductible!


If you choose to go with Apple Care instead, they are comparable. Apple will charge you a deductible if they need to replace your phone due to damage you have caused (dropping and cracking the screen, etc.) However, Apple will only replace your phone up to two times before they cancel your policy (if the replacement is due to user error). On the bright side, Apple will not charge you a deductible if the hardware goes bad due to manufacturing or overheating, even if they have to replace the entire phone. If the fault lies with the phone itself, they will repair it an unlimited amount of times.


Between the two policies, the SquareTrade policy will get you more savings if you tend to damage your phone (water damage, droppage, etc.) SquareTrade will also give you longer and cheaper coverage. However, Apple Care will give you better coverage for manufacturing defects and device defects, and Apple Care takes less time/energy/communication overall (less hassle).


I guess a post like this would have been more helpful in September when the new iPhone 5 was released, but for those who are just now purchasing an iPhone, I hope it has helped clarify some of the vagueness!

For me, Square Trade is a must for all my portable electronics because I have a small child at home. Three months after we got an iPod Touch he dropped it in the toilet. Apple will not repair immersion damage (Apple Care+ covers spills but not immersion). That was the end of the iPod! Square Trade does cover immersion, so now I get warranties on everything.

i have a question for ST customers, Next week Samsung is replacing my LN46B650 LCD with UN46ES6100 and giving me 1 year warranty, now how can i extended the warranty with ST. will they count the dates from LN46B650 purchase date or from the replacement date?

I don't take my phone near toilet,shower,pool or lake.

dropped my s3 a week after i got it. took it to a local repair place. quoted me 350 to fix the screen. I paid for it, ST reimbursed me. no deductible. great cust service.

since then i bought a bunch of warranties through them.

I generated the codes for the December promo, and it was supposed to expire on 1/31 if you generated the codes before they ran out. I used one of the codes on 1/12 and it worked fine and gave me 40% off.
