Ya know, I admit, I was only somewhat familiar with the law. Now that I've actually read what the law is [berkeley.edu] (in California) the main thing that comes to mind is... are they freaking nuts?!
The only time it's SAFE for people to have right away is in when a car is stopped or moving very slowly. That's pretty much going to be a parking lot, or at a stop light/sign, and even then only when the pedestrian is following the flow of traffic. People are small, and often hard to see, particularly from a distance, or at night, and even more so if wearing dark clothing. Cars are big, much easier to see and to predict their movement (they're following the road after all), and at night they are LIT UP BRIGHTLY!. People are more maneuverable, both because they have a turning radius of ZERO and because they aren't moving as fast. A car traveling 45mph could take over 200ft to stop [csgnetwork.com], that's 2/3 of a football field for a car that's not going all that fast. The video in the OP's link shows people just walking right out into traffic in the crosswalk...and apparently it's legal enough that lawyers want to sue on behalf of the fools stupid enough to attempt it. The link I followed discusses the complete confusion over who has right of way... probably because the laws are old, from back in the days when cars moved about twice walking speed and in today's world don't make any sense as written. And shoot, even where people DO legitimately have right of way, for example the parking lot at the grocery store... folks, stop, look both ways, and please do NOT expect the big huge child crushing SUV to magically know your there. Car's have blind spots folks, and showing a little courtesy in general (both drivers and cars) would go a long way towards protecting people's safety and actually letting a car get past the entrance to Kroger. In short, nice that the bumper sticker is free, and it does promote awareness of the actual law, but dang, the law is out dated and broken and in need of some serious rethinking! |

Wonder if anyone will make a, "I aim for Pedestrians" bumper sticker? (Maybe something with red splashes on it?)
