Making money off a website

You don't need a business but if you do bring in alot of money then the extra work to formally make it a business will be beneficial for tax purposes. Legally, I believe if something happens and you get sued, then only the assets of your business can be claimed instead of your personal assets.

Why would people pay to subscribe?

So much free info on the web. What would make your info worth a subscription?

I know what to eat to lose fat, and I've come up with a way to figure out someone's metabolism and tailor their diet to their weight/ body composition/ metabolism. Over 6 months I kept my weight almost the same and went from 25% body fat to under 5% with 2-3 hrs a week @ the gym & proper eating. I've had friends try it out with similar results. Only hard part is that I need to track approximate macro-nutrients to figure out everything, so everyone would have their own tailored diet

I hope you have a good marketing plan. The whole "if you build it they will come" doesn't really work well on the internet. Thats why so many merchants sell on platforms like Amazon and ebay and pay the 15%+ commission because they could never get a fraction of the traffic.

I'm going to chime in and also agree. You will put a ton of time in and make very little to nothing in the end. Your fitness site sounds like a dud from the beginning. Your wifes blog could make money through advertisement like google adsense but it is far less than you think unless she gets some serious traffic flowing.

From my experience a consistant 1000 visitors a day is worth about $30-50...per month in adsense revenue. Factor in at minimum about $10 per month to expenses (domain name and hosting for the site) and your left with $20-40 for hours and hours of work. Better off working a shift at mcdonalds once a month...

The entrepreneurial support is overwhelming.

OP - if you wan't to be a legit business and respected as such, then do it the right way. Could be as simple as a self-proprietorship and $50 with your local state. If not, build the site and the demand for the information will dictate if it's something the market will reward you for.

I think people are just trying to prepare the OP of what is to come. Starting a site and making money from it is not a easy task.

He may not have asked for anyone opinion, but it could have helped raised issues he has not thought about. He can chose to ignore the advice, or it can raise issues the OP didn't even think of. Either way, theres no downside except for the min it takes to read it.

I see this sort of thing alot. People think they will just open their own site instead of paying Amazon or ebay the whooping 15% commission. If only it was that easy.

And? So? They can and will without doing any of that. I can think of 4-5 ways right off the top of my head.

If you're so concerned with his success (assuming he cares what you think) then maybe try some positive reinforcement based on your experience on how he can make it success?
