Can I deduct moving expenses on 2013 tax refund if i moved between states for job?
In 2011 I had a job in CA. In 2012 January my job contract in CA ended. In Feb 2012 I moved back home (to Arizona to stay with family). In April 2012 I got a full time job again in CA. Can i deduct the moving expenses (mileage, shipping container supplies, etc..) incurred during the moving process from AZ to CA on my 2013 CA and FED tax refund?
"the second test is the "time test." If you are an employee, you must work full-time for at least 39 weeks during the first 12 months immediately following your arrival in the general area of your new job location. " does that mean i have to wait until 10 months have passed and im still in my new job?
if i file my return today, can i still use the deduction because it would be 10 months by the return deadline (april 15)?
If you have a reasonable expectation that you'll work the required 39 weeks during the first year (e.g., you aren't hired on in a temporary position, or your contract isn't only for 6 months), you can file on your 2012 taxes.
You'll only be able to deduct your AZ to CA expenses (not CA to AZ), and double check which expenses are deductible. Meals and long term storage are not, which are the main ones that come to mind.
