If calling to make a complaint at 1-888-BestBuy, SPECIFICALLY request to speak with CONSUMER RELATIONS. Everyone else will give you the run around! Bestbuy will issue you a $50 GC via mail once they verify your receipt for a SINGLE ITEM purchase of $100+.

**I just spoke with the consumer relates dept. and they told me under no circumstances are they allowed to compensate anyone. This directive came down from the big wigs at HQ.** 01/27/13 15:36

Deal is DEAD! Promo was only good for ONE DAY, Monday January 21, MLK Holiday!

Original LINK finally removed from BB servers sometime on 01.23.13

Edit by ReanimationXP, 1/22/13 @ 12:24pm:
Deal is dead officially, but still working provisionally! YMMV.

A correction like this is false advertising! Don't let this one die so easily, SDers!

I just called 1-888-BestBuy and explained that the manager at the Camelback location in Phoenix, AZ was refusing to honor the deal of the printout I had, and warned this could bring about a false advertising lawsuit. She was very nice and helpful. I was trying to buy Amazon gift cards which she could not pull up online (I coudn't either), but she offered to mail me a $100 gift card and only charge me $50 for it. She also double-checked that I would be able to buy an Amazon gift card with my Best Buy giftcard once it comes in. YMMV, good luck!

EDIT: I just mentioned how they took care of the guy below me with the Keurig, and she sent me $150 gift cards for the price of $50 and express shipped them to me without me even asking! This is incredible! They really don't want a lawsuit Smilie

READ the thread for latest info. Some people got denied when using the coupon.

What has been confirmed based on comment in this thread (WITHOUT manager override)
  • Doesn't work on sale items - Not true according to some but Bestbuy forum confirmed this. It is $50 off regular price
  • One Single item must be more than $100 - Not true according to some but Bestbuy forum link in the beginning of Wiki confirmed One item must be at least $100.
  • Doesn't work on GC - Confirmed to exclude gift cards by a Best Buy representative on Facebook, but YMMV

Note from a Slickdealer about gift cards: "Bought the Amazon GCs and manager thought $50 would be statement credit, told me if I did not get statement credit to come back and he would adjust. Did not want to play that game so returned the GCs and got a printer. The manager had to call their support team, and they said that it does not work on any GCs at all. (YMMV of course). It did not take the $50 automatically on the GCs but did on the printer..."
  • Doesn't work on video games - Not true according to some
  • Doesn't work on Kindle Paperwhite WiFi without manager override
  • Doesn't work on Apple TV without manager override
To qualify for the discount, MasterCard must be used on a purchase of $100 or greater. Some people indicate ONE item need to be over $100, but multiple people have gotten it to work with no override on a combined purchase.

Per the facebook page:
Quote :
Hi Amy-

It has to be ANY Mastercard credit card. Mastercard gift cards would not be accepted.

-Jesse-

Pre-paid master cards may no longer work if the manager is in the loop

* I paid CASH... but had a prepaid Walmart MasterCard($3 fee) in hand because after the cashier and manager were done doing the override,
they paid no attention to the $50 bill I handed over.Just rang it up and gave me the receipt. Smilie
I think the reason is that the coupon didn't scan on the 4 $25 Amazon Kindle gift cards
and they had to take off the $50 manually. If the coupon had scanned, it would probably
not accept any other payment except MasterCard. Smilie

If you don't have a Mastercard, purchase a prepaid Mastercard from any store and use it. Read cashier instructions on coupon. Doesn't seem to have exclusions regarding type of Mastercard.

California
Valencia - purchased multiple blu-rays. bb.com had the LOTR extended blu ray set for $45.99 so price matched plus bought Ted, Sons of Anarchy, Legend and Red Riding Hood. Manager override needed, he came over and knocked down the price of SOA and LOTR to reflect the $50 off. Cashier had issues with the coupon, had to be scanned first but still needed the override to work. paid with best buy card Smilie not mastercard.

Tustin - Wouldn't accept the coupon on multiple items, it had to be over $100 on a single purchase.

Marina - As of 4 pm, my wife was able to snag two Amazon GCs (cashier and manager didn't care). I was able to buy 9 x 16 K-cups, even though the coupon said ONE SINGLE ITEM. The Marina Best Buy is really lax. It's probably because it's in a small town.

Georgia
Atlanta (Perimeter) - Not taking coupon *today* "due to error in BBY system"
Duluth - Worked with Roku 2 XS with mgr. over ride

Maryland
Owings Mills - Gift Cards of any type - no good (manager said no), everything else is okay (minus exceptions) (1/21/13 @ 10:01)
Security Blvd - gift cards are considered "air time cards" therefore will not sell any product that requires "activation" with this promo, else products can be bought. (1/21/13 @ 11:20)
Frederick, MD (21703) - WORKED! needed mgr.. Wanted to buy 3 with seperate transactions, instead mgr took $150 off the canon 430 flash. (scooped for $111, down from $350 on sale for $255)
White Marsh, MD - The manager has asked all the associate to deny honoring the coupon because "the system does not apply the coupon correctly" . I talked to the manager and she refuses to do overrides even though I stood in line for 45 minutes.

Minnesota-
St Cloud - I was able to buy the 24" LG LED HDTV Reg Price $229 SALE price $169-$50 coupon = final price of $119 + tax. I was THRILLED! They were very careful at first to make sure it didn't go against any of the restrictions but went through smoothly. I purchased at about 7:30p.m. Monday though. They weren't going to honor it any other day. There were signs all over the store and on the front doors.

Virginia
Manassas (20110) -Worked on Canon lens
Sterling/Dulles - Worked with xbox 320 GB hdd upgrade without any problem
Reston - picked up the last 3TB WD Green. Manager was needed to process the order, but gave me no trouble about the coupon. Got it for $104.99 after tax.
Chantilly - picked up ANOTHER 3TB WD Green. This time for some reason, they gave it to me for $99.74 after tax! Apparently when the manager overrides the price, the result can be different depending on how they do it.
Woodbridge (22193) -Worked on Apple TV w/ Manager Approval at 3pm. Went back and they won't give any discounts to Apple products as of 6pm.

Indiana
Bloomington (47404) - Did not work on gift cards. was able to use it on a Roku XS 2
Columbus (47201) - Worked on 2x $50 Amazon GC's - overridden by cashier w/out manager approval. Crappy store. Refused to honor the coupon.

Austin(78704 on Ben White Blvd) - did not work on gift cards, manager would not override.

Willowbrook(77066) - worked on Intel 520 120GB SSD drive. Coupon wouldn't scan but worked on manual entry.
Edit: They have stopped any GC purchase with coupon here in Willowbrook store. They are NOT doing manual override anymore. Whatever scans will be allowed only. Had to buy a kids DVD on top of Roku-2 XS to bring it above $100. Even school supplied or candy won't work Frown.

Coupon still wouldn't take but manager (different from the am, obviously) came over and fixed it no problemo. Smilie
Woodbridge - worked 2 min to closing, but they held firm to exclusing/inclusion list. Poor cashiers were hammered today, so I conveyed to them a heartfelt thanks
Howell - Didnt work on giftcards but I got 2 aqua pure filters for Samsung refrigerator for $100 - $50 total being $50 plus tax. Manager had to override but it worked and still a decent deal.
Howell - around 8pm had signs all over the door that it must be on ONE item equally 100. I walked out empty handed. Frown

Not actually good for us SDers, because that means more lurkers that will ruin the deal for everyone.

Some of us have a life which includes work, school, etc. and cannot just drop everything to sit outside of BB at 10AM to take advantage of a great coupon. Some of us with lives *did* get the coupon and planned to use it by the 27th as stated on the coupon.

I am pissed that instead of just tightening up the exclusions to prevent obvious abuse and fraud, BB instead decided to cancel the coupon altogether. They didn't need to do that. I don't shop at BB much to begin with, but this whole fiasco reminds me why I avoid them whenever possible.
No offense, but you've been here since 2006 also. So lets be honest, are you really surprised that a $50 off $100 Best Buy coupon was short lived or that it was heavily abused? You're going with the "i have a life" excuse, but it was a deal that lasted an entire day which is much MUCH longer than most mistakes. So as a veteran out here then you have to accept some responsibility for missing out on a 10a-9p deal.

Obviously youre upset, but rather than lashing out into a computer then why not just give BB customer relations a call? You got the email so you have a good chance to get the compensation that all these non-email people got and maybe you'll score a $50 gift card for a store you claim to not even want to shop at.

It's a long story, and all documented in that thread. Pretty hilarious/weird sideshow in the TouchPad frenzy.

Word.

Any veteran SD'er knew this would be a race against the clock the second it was posted on SD the night before. I think my post the night before was "this will be epic". It's actually shocking it sort of lasted 1 day.

Too long ago to give you exact posts. Basically some guy running a "business" out of his double wide trailer in the sticks off a dirt road took a MOUNTAIN of orders for fire sale $99 TouchPads he could not possibly deliver and kept stringing people along with outrageous stories about how they were still coming, while sucking paypal dry of the money people paid in advance. Someone found priors for check fraud in the local court records there, and his "CFO" posted crazycakes pictures of herself looking...well, crazy, right before (or just after, I forget) she committed herself to mental health and resigned from the business. Then she was BACK again like a week later. It was the best sidestory during the TP frenzy. Some awesome photoshop jobs, too.

I've attached a couple of the crazy pics "Brandy", the "CFO", posted.

It has been quite the tumble for best buy over the past decade and it does seem to have roots in what was posted earlier with BBY trying to weed out demon shoppers. That mentality has directed their stores and employees. What's most puzzling to me is the lack of refusal to learn from repetitive mistakes. It must be hubris.

Paypal account was frozen, the "company" MagicJack phone line taken out, lost track. Dunno what the final result was. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear.

EDIT: Here's his Horry County mugshot (LAWSON, TIMOTHY JOE ) from May 2012! Priceless. Charges are not listed, so this COULD be the arrest for remnants of the touchpad fraud for those that didn't get refunds.

EDIT2: Actually, looks like it was a DUI arrest.

I hope those who scored really big on giftcards on Monday will tell your children this:

"Kids, daddy want to tell you what daddy did in January of 2013. Best Buy had $50 of $100 coupon. Daddy didn't get invited. But daddy found this great SD site that posted it. The coupon was too good to be true because it had no restrictions. It said "No copies. No dealers" but didn't say anything about 1 coupon per customer. So daddy printed out lots of it and went to Best Buy in early morning. The store was stupid enough to take it. So daddy scored $6,000 worth of giftcards for half price until Best Buy stopped taking them. Damn Best Buy! The coupon had no restrictions! How could they do that to me? Best Buy later said it was a mistake. Fvck them! It's their fault. Anyway. daddy found out Best Buy lost 50 million dollars that day. The following year Best Buy closed for good. Daddy was so proud to have played important role in bankrupting Best Buy. So kids, if you see something that's too good to be true, try it anyway. If it works, repeat as much as you can until the stores can't take them anymore. Daddy only made a few grand from that deal, not enough to take our family out of this $hithole called home. But if you see a deal on SD daddy will make sure we hit the stores before they realize what hit them."

Touchpad thing brought a LOT more since it had 60x+ more views. Quite a bit of the "ugly" you're talking about arrived more than a year ago.

The thing is, it DOES need to be spelled out exactly. That's how coupons work. People are not mind-readers. You can't make a coupon and then say "that's totally not how I meant it, so you can't use it that way". Best Buy regularly puts out coupons that are extremely specific. That's why this coupon stood out: the terms were very lenient.
My argument is that it's impossible to exactly spell out the terms of a coupon, and at some point people need to rely on common sense in order to precisely interpret the terms. Let's keep that in focus as I move on to the next point . . .

Quote :
The coupon actually does say you can't do that. Your situation would not work because even if you bought a $5000 TV, the coupon says "$50 off $100 or more". $5000 is more than $100, so you'd only get $50 off. It does not say "$50 off every $100 you spend in store" or something similar. Most people realize that and didn't even try it. They knew it wouldn't work based on the specific terms on the coupon.
You're relying on an interpretation of the word "or more." I could simply argue that I wanted to break the one $5000 transaction into 50 separate $100 transactions, and there is nothing in the coupon that precisely says this is impossible. After all, this is also how people bought $5000 in gift cards; they broke up the transaction into 50 separate ones.

The point is that you interpreted "or more" in that way because of your experience being a customer. You know that transactions on large items can't be divided into smaller parts. But I could march down to Best Buy right now and make that demand simply because "it doesn't explicitly say you can't on the coupon."

[QUOTE]No copies means just that: no photocopies. As you say, it doesn't mean you can't print it off, and it doesn't say you can only use 1 in store, so if you print off 2, you could ostensibly use 2. Again, quite clear from the coupon terms.[/QUOTE}

How could you possibly think this is what it means? It doesn't have "no photocopying" in the phrase, and it's pretty worthless to include a "no copies" provision to prevent people from making copies of a printed copy. You're making some pretty big assumptions that the coupon writer inserted this language just because of "coupon conventions" and not deliberately to avoid certain abuses.

Quote :
And your arguments are making massive assumptions about what a large corporation was thinking. Mine are based off of very specific words that they communicated to me through the coupon, i.e. what they actually stated. If they didn't want you to use a bagillion copies to buy a bagillion items, they would limit you to 1 use of the coupon per house, visit, person, etc..., and they have done that in the past. Why would they not say that if they only wanted you to use it once?
Whenever you make any kind of interpretation, you have to make assumptions about the writer's intentions. Like your claim about "no copies": your claim that it is "clear" what that means is obviously false, given that many of us disagree with you and think it means something else. And who do you think is more correct here? I'm basing my interpretation on the fact that gift cards operate under an absurdly low profit margin, and so Best Buy never would have deliberately wanted a coupon to be used to purchase massive quantities of gift cards. You're just insisting - once again, when there is ample evidence that the terms of a coupon are always ambiguous to a certain degree - that a company has to spell out EVERY SINGLE LITTLE THING in the coupon terms; otherwise, you have the right to do whatever you want with it, and the company is somehow being unethical if they deny you some weird combination that they never considered when crafting it.
